(Upcoming) Games of 2012 – My anticipation should be yours

Well its been a year since I posted about my anticipated games of 2011. I still havent managed to figure out how to be excited about things again. Actually its probably worse now. But wangsty whinging aside. I ended up playing most of the games on last years list, even those I thought I wouldnt. Overall there were a lot more pleasant surprises than expected disappointments. Which was nice. Looking forward to 2012 it looks like its going to be a pretty awesome year for gaming. Though I probably wont have a lot of time to play them until I finish up college, which is bad. On the other hand I’ll be unemployed shortly which leaves me with free weekends, which is good.

2012 is interesting, well in terms of anticipation at least, in that there are a lot of games coming out that I’m simply unsure of. They sound like the could be awesome but harsh experience has thought me that believeing in ad-copy and previews is all to often the path to dissapointment-ville, population – everyone who ever believed Peter Molyneux. But weirdly enough the ambiguity about these games is actually increasing my anticipation. It’s as if the futures my on again off again girlfriend and I’m waiting to find out if she’s pregnant (that’s right, I made sweet love to the future). Well, disturbing metphors aside, onwards!

Sadly my dissertation/research paper got in the way of finishing this off so some of the games are already out and either clutched in my sweaty mitts or lingering on the shelves pining for my touch.

Brief note on format, games title links to the official page, thats followed by the release date and what platform I intend to get it for, then we have two representative screen shots, the advertising blurb, the trailer, and finally, why I want it. Games are listed in order of release date.

Anticipated Games

These are the games that I’m actively looking forward to. I want to play them and I want to play them now. They are the games that have the best chance of retaining my attention before something shiny draws it away.

Soulcalibur V

(03/02/12)(PS3)

What they say: Soulcalibur V, the latest entry in the premier weapons-based head-to-head fighting series continues the epic struggle of warriors in search for the legendary Soul Sword. Taking place 17 years after the events of Soulcalibur IV and continues the epic story of warriors in search of the legendary Soul Swords in 17th century Europe. The heroic battles transpire in a beautiful and fluid world with eye-popping graphics and visual appeal. Soulcalibur V tunes the battle, movement, and visual systmes so playeers can pull of cool dynamic attacks with ease and battle with complete freedom. A new dawn rises in the eternal struggle between the mighty Soul Swords!

Why I want it: Well as I took my while finishing this up I actually already have it and it’s excellent. With a few caveats, the single player content is a little weak, but the gameplay is my favourite since SCII.

Final Fantasy XIII-2

(03/02/12)(PS3)

What they say: She spent years fighting her destiny. With courage in her heart, she faced the false gods who ruled over people for centuries.

Her unfaltering determination changed the world. The gods were vanquished, their plans to massacre the human race destroyed. As Cocoon fell, a single pillar formed, connecting the ravaged world to the one below―Pulse, the underworld. It was the beginning of a new era.
However, she was nowhere to be found. Everyone was convinced she was gone―with the exception of her sister, Serah Farron.

Three years later―

A single meteorite falls from the sky. As spatial distortions are created, bloodthirsty monsters appear, threatening the peaceful existence of the townspeople.

In the midst of this chaos, Serah is rescued by a young man by the name of Noel. A hunter from the future, he appears in front of her with a message.

“Come with me across the boundaries of time,” he says. “Your sister is waiting.”

She is Lightning—protector of the Goddess who rules the realm of death and chaos. She is Serah’s sister, her heroine, her savior.

I need to see my sister again.

Grabbing her weapon, Serah heads out on a journey as she takes her first step into a new, unknown future.

Why I want it: I wasnt really interested in this at all because FFXIII was average at best and nothing about it made me want to return to it. However I tried out the demo of this and was more than pleasantly surprised, I was hooked. So hooked that I picked the game up on the day of release and have since completed the main story line. This game is great, it feels like a “proper” Final Fantasy experience and is almost certainly one of my favourite Final Fantasy’s full-stop.

Crusader Kings II

(14/02/12)(PC)

What they say: Europe is in turmoil. The lands are fragmented into petty fiefs, the emperor struggles with the Pope, and the Holy Father declares that all those who go to liberate the Holy Land will be freed of their sins. Now is the time for greatness.

Increase your lands and fill your coffers, appoint vassals, battle traitors, introduce laws while interacting with hundreds of nobles, and create the most powerful dynasty of medieval Europe.
A beleaguered king will always have friends to support him. But beware, as your rule and realm may find trouble when a loyal vassal becomes a bitter rival. Stand ready, increase your prestige, and listen to the world whisper your name in awe.
Do you have what it takes to become a Crusader King?

Why I want it: Well this is another one that I actually already have. I’ve only played it for a few hours because I havent had the time to dedicate to it, much like Paradox’s other games this one is going to simply eat away hours of your life. It was very enjoyable from what I’ve played of it but again, like most Paradox games, the learning curve seems relatively steep. The increased characterisation does make failure fun though.

Asura’s Wrath

(09/03)(PS3)

What they say: Fuck that, look at the video.

Why I want it: FUCK THAT, LOOK AT THE VIDEO! Addendum: I had this pre-ordered and cancelled it. Why? Because even though the majority of the reviews were positive the game seems to be only around six hours long and unfortunately money’s too tight (to mention) at the moment for me to splash out that much on so short a game.

Street Fighter X Tekken

(09/03/12)(PS3)

What they say:The long awaited dream match-up between the two leaders in the fighting genre becomes a reality. STREET FIGHTER X TEKKEN delivers the ultimate tag team match up featuring iconic characters from each franchise, and one of the most robust character line ups in fighting game history. With the addition of new gameplay mechanics, the acclaimed fighting engine from Street Fighter IV has been refined to suit the needs of both Street Fighter and TEKKEN players alike.

  • Dream Match Up – Dozens of playable characters including Ryu, Ken, Guile, Able, and Chun-Li from Street Fighter as well as Kazuya, Nina, King, Marduk, and Bob from TEKKEN.
  • Real-time Tag Battle – Fight as a team of two and switch between characters strategically.
  • Familiar Controls – In STREET FIGHTER X TEKKEN, controls will feel familiar for fans of both series.
  • Juggle System – Toss your foes into TEKKEN-style juggles with STREET FIGHTER X TEKKEN’s universal air launching system.
  • Robust Online Modes – In addition to the online features from Super Street Fighter IV, STREET FIGHTER X TEKKEN features totally upgraded online functionality and some new surprises.

Why I want it: Street Fighter and Tekken are without contest my two favourite fighting game franchises and have been from 1991 and 1994 respetively. But for some reason my interest in this game is all over the place. I was really interested in in when it was first announced. But as details emegered my intrest waned, not for any particular reason (thought I’m not super hype about the gem system), it was almost as if some kind of odd malaise was affecting me. There were occasional bursts of interest but they died quickly enough. Actually I’m fairly sure I know what the reason is. I love fighting games. But online play, even good online play, is always affected by lag. I much prefer offline play. But due to geographic concerns and general lack of interest among my friends I never really have anyone to play with. So no matter how much I enjoy a fighting game I eventually tire of playing with myself (ho ho). I’ll probably pick this up anyway.

Yakuza Dead Souls

(16/03/12)(PS3)

What they say: April 2011, Kamurocho, Tokyo, a city that never sleeps, even when under attack from zombies.

The undead are multiplying and filling the streets of Tokyo’s red light district. The area is quarantined quickly, but degenerates into a district full of terror, panic and devastation. Survivors try to flee the city, but four men rise up to protect those they care most about. If you think zombies are bad, meet the Yakuza.

As they run through the battle-scarred streets and witness the scale of the destruction, they are seen as the final hope for the remaining residents of the city as they kick, snipe, batter and bulldoze their way through the hordes of zombies.

Immerse yourself in the Kamurocho experience as the true to life recreation of Tokyo’s sin-city district faces its greatest threat. Unravel the story as you play through the eyes of four characters, form alliances, and work together to save Japan from the zombie apocalypse.

Key Features

Tokyo as you’ve never seen it before
From Zombie table tennis to gunning down the walking dead on a date with a beautiful hostess, all the side missions, clubs, karaoke, bars, dungeon crawling, and more are back.

Four playable characters
The revered Kazuma Kiryu and Shun Akiyama return, now joined by Goro “Mad-dog” Majima and Ryuji Goda, the Dragon of Kansai.

Unleash new devastation
Unleash new devastation. Use the all-new heat-snipe to unleash chaos in the face of hordes of zombies.

Zombies, guns, and gore
The Yakuza franchise takes an exciting new twist with an all-new 3rd person shooting mechanic, a wide array of guns and upgrades, and a city packed full of the undead.

Why I want it: As I mentioned over here I was a big fan of Yakuza 4, I’d be tempted to buy anything these guys put out sight unseen. Even better, my favourite character from Yakuza 4, Shun Akiyama, is returning. On the other hand, zombies, I’m fucking bored of them, bored, bored, bored. On the third hand (I’m like Kanon) I get the feeling that the team behind this have the chops to keep this interesting, entertaining (and based on the trailers, amusing). In many ways this could be seen as “the Japanese Dead Rising”. Which is something I actually find appealing, despite the disappointment Dead Rising 2 was.

Disgaea 3: Absence of Detention

(20/04/12)(VITA)

What they say: The awardwinning fan favorite Disgaea 3 is set to join the HD handheld revolution with Absence of Detention, an expanded, enhanced special release for PS Vita, slated to land this spring. With all of the console release’s DLC, plus new characters, story chapters, quests, bosses, touch controls, and more, Absence of Detention promises to be one of the biggest Disgaea games yet – and you can carry it in the palm of your hand!

  • NEW VITAEXCLUSIVE CONTENT AND FEATURES
Two new characters and story chapters, new quests and bosses, new skills specific to each job and character class, new super moves, new Tera magic, new front and rear touch controls, and new GPS positioning functionality take full advantage of the power of PlayStation®Vita!
  • ADVANCED ITEM CUSTOMIZATION
In previous Disgaea games, new items could be created based on the stats of something else, but the customization stopped there. In Absence of Detention, players can choose how those items look, too, giving them more control over the look and feel of their items than ever before!
  • COMPETE WITH YOUR FRIENDS USING THE RECORD SHOP
View other players’ game stats and rankings on PlayStation®Network to determine who the most hardcore Disgaea player is!

Why I want it: Because I am Disgaea’s bitch? I bought the first and second game on the PS2, the expanded ports of the first and second game on the PSP, the third game on the PS3 (I also bought all the DLC which I never even got around to using, like a retaard), the fourth game on the PS3 and I have pre-ordered this for the VITA. As you may have surmised, I’m a big fan of the series and its very well suited to mobile gaming (and extra content = yay).

Dragon’s Dogma

(22/05/12)(PS3)

What they say: Dragon’s Dogma is an exciting new franchise which redefines the action genre from the team that produced some of Capcom’s greatest action games. Set in a huge open world, Dragon’s Dogma offers an exhilarating and fulfilling action combat game with the freedom to explore and interact in a rich, living and breathing world. Dragon’s Dogma introduces an innovative team system to the genre. Known as Pawns, these three AI partners fight independently, demonstrating prowess and ability they have developed based on traits learned over time from the player and their actions. By utilizing Xbox LIVE or PlayStation Network players will journey to the Rift where they can share their own Pawns with friends and be rewarded with treasure, knowledge of the world and strategies for taking down enemies. Conversely, players can borrow friends’ Pawns with the specific skills or experience required to tackle a particular quest. In addition, Dragon’s Dogma will ship with thousands of readymade Pawns for players to select offline. With an epic story and incredible action, Dragon’s Dogma is set to be one of Capcom’s newest hit franchises.

  • Resident Evil®6 demo – Dragon’s Dogma will ship with a redeemable token allowing purchasers early access to the Resident Evil 6 demo.
  • Highly Stylised Action Combat – The creators of this game were responsible for the action hits – Resident Evil® 4 and Devil May Cry® 4.
  • Fight With Ability – The soul of combat comes down to how the game is played, where you strike the enemy, and how you react to their attacks.
  • Pawn Them All – The pawn system offers flexible combat assistance with a main pawn companion that you can train throughout the game and two secondary pawns that can vary wildly to fit your combat style.
  • Help Your Friends, Help Yourself: To enhance your battle experience, share your main pawn with friends and others via Xbox LIVE or PlayStation Network. Your pawn’s experience as a member of someone else’s game will be passed on to you in loot, knowledge of the open world and strategies for taking down enemies. Or, you can choose one of the thousands of AI pawns included with the game.
  • Accessible Depth – Bringing an unprecedented level of depth to the action genre, every decision has an effect on gameplay in an intuitive way that does not require micromanagement. The weight of your weapon, the material of your armor – even the length of your legs – plays a role in how you fight your battles, but does not interrupt the flow of the action.
  • Epic Adventure – Dragon’s Dogma is built from the ground up as an action experience for consoles with a continuous, epic storyline that stands alone in style, scope and substance.
  • Open World – Utilizing Capcom’s proprietary MT Framework engine and the groundbreaking graphical styles and lighting effects used in Resident Evil® 5 and Lost Planet® 2, Dragon’s Dogma expands the environment to create a vast, richly detailed world, ripe for exploration.
  • Night and Day – The open world features a dynamic 24-hour day/night cycle that will offer different enemies and surprises depending on when you venture into the world.
  • A Rich Population – In addition to interacting with hundreds of fully voiced NPCs, you’ll be able to fight a large

Why I want it: Because of those sweet bonus Guts and Griffith costumes? Because it’s been produced by Hiroyuki Kobayashi who has literally not produced a game I do not at least really like (You may remeber him from such games as Resident Evil 1,2 & 4, Dino Crisis, Devil May Cry and Sengoku Basara)? Because the games director has been planning it since he was in shcool? Because that director is Hideaki Itsuno (You may remeber him from such games as Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne, Devil May Cry 3, Marvel vs Capcom 2, Power Stone 1&2, SF3 3rd Strike and Rival Schools)? Because its the most expensive game Capcom have ever made? Because you can throw pigs around? Because it looks fucking awesome?

Gravity Rush

(12/06/12)(VITA)

What they say: Manipulate gravity to save your world from destruction. Gain a new perspective as you take on the role of Kat, a strong-willed girl seeking the means to protect her future in a world that’s crumbling to pieces. Tilt and move the PlayStation Vita, taking gravity into your own hands to deliver devastating attacks, uncover the secrets to your past and explore a mysterious world.

Experience beautiful cel-shaded graphics brought to life through OLED technology, delivering crisp and vivid colors.
Use the motion sensor to control gravity, slide through environments and dodge enemy attacks.

Why I want it: Because it looks slick as fuck and has gotten universally positive reviews. This isnt going to be the overall “killer app” for the Vita but it is going to shift some units. The gameplay looks awesome.

Darksiders II

(26/06/12)(PS3)

What they say: Awakened by the End of Days, Death, the most feared of the legendary Four Horsemen, embarks upon a quest to restore mankind, and redeem his brother’s name. Along the way, the Horseman discovers there are far worse things than an earthly Apocalypse, and that an ancient grudge may threaten all of Creation… Can DEATH really become mankind’s savior?

Why I want it: Darksiders was a very welcome surprise, as I say here “The game oozes cool, looks awesome, is a good length (~15 hours) and when you complete it you will have a physical need for the sequel.” Well it looks like I will soon have the chance to satisfy that desire. The fact that it’s released on my birthday is simply icing on the cake.

Prototype 2

(27/04/12)(PS3)

/

What they say:The sequel to Radical Entertainment’s best-selling open-world action game of 2009, PROTOTYPE® 2 takes the unsurpassed carnage of the original PROTOTYPE and continues the experience of becoming the ultimate shape-shifting weapon. You are Sgt James Heller, husband to a deceased wife and child and a soldier left simply to die.

As the game’s all-new infected protagonist, players will experience Sgt James Heller cutting a bloody swathe through the wastelands of post-viral New York Zero. Equipped with unparalleled new shapeshifting powers, players will gradually build a vast genetic arsenal of deadly new biological weapons and abilities as they hunt, kill and consume their way toward the ultimate goal – to kill…Alex…Mercer!

Are you ready to murder your maker?

Why I want it: Hulk: Ultimate Destruction was the greatest super-hero videogame ever made. Then the guys behind it made Prototype, which was better. Now they are making Prototype 2, which I’m hoping will be better still.

The Secret World

(19/06/12)(PC)

What they say: The game uses the same engine as Age of Conan. There will be neither levels, nor classes in the game; instead, the character building will be skill-based. This way, the developers plan to avoid level grinding, allowing new players to join the game more easily. The player characters will be customizable to a large degree, particularly in their choice of clothing, weapons (which range from shotguns to swords and can be customized and upgraded), and the supernatural powers they acquire. Combat against computer-controlled monsters will be one of the game’s central points and will require more of player’s attention than contemporary MMORPGs. The players will be able to form teams to fight together but in an earlier blog posting, Tørnquist (the lead Developer) assured that the game can also be played in single-player mode, should a player choose not to play with a group. According to him, the game is story-driven and there will be an overarching linear plot, as well as numerous side-quests, ranging from investigation to sabotage and hunting, since diversity of the gameplay will be another central point.

The game is set in the “modern day real world” but also incorporates pieces of ancient mythologies, real and false history, urban legends, and pop culture, and ties them into an original back-story. The latter is said to go back in time for 100 million years and encompass long extinct ancient civilizations. The players will assume the roles of supernatural heroes who participate in a “future war between good and evil”, fighting dark monsters that threaten the modern world. Tørnquist identified the genre of the story as dark fantasy, mentioning vampires, demons, and zombies. The players will be free to travel across different locations of the world (both real, like London, New York and Seoul, and mythical, e.g. Agartha, the legendary city located within Hollow Earth) and even in time, to pursue the overall plot and investigate new mysteries in connection to the dark invasion. The overall plot will have a conclusion but the designers also leave room for future expansions.

Why I want it: I’m entirely bored of traditional MMO’s. I may eventually pick up World of Warcraft again but it wont be for long. I no longer want to level grind and slowly gear up to fight slightly different coloured versions of existing monsters to earn slightly different coloured versions of my current gear. I am bored of the standard MMO setup and off the cookie cutter fantasy milieus. Which is why out of twenty or thirty games there are only two MMOG’s and both of them are wildly divergent from the standard set-up. While I’m sure the design of the game will change over time once it stays close to whats above this will be a day one purchase for me. This is what I want to see from MMOG’s; a complete single player experience which can be enhanced by playing with others – not a crippled single player experience entirely reliant on strangers. I like the idea of a “flat world” with skill based progression.

Apart from the game design elements the settings ticks a lot of my “like” boxes. Lovecraftian horrors, modern day, firearms, secret societies, heavy customisation, etc. All of this stuff looks excellent. Im hoping this a) lives up to its promises and b) is released this year.

Borderlands 2

(18/09/12)(PC)

What they say: Borderlands 2 furthers the distinct blending of First Person Shooter and Role Playing genres to create the true evolution of the Role Playing Shooter. Team up with up to three other players for four-player online goodness or go old-school with two-player split-screen couch sharing mayhem as you spend hours leveling up your character and equipping them with one of the millions of badass weapons. Borderlands 2 features a new visually stunning array of procedurally generated guns, shields, grenades, artifacts, enemies and more. Choose one of the four new character classes to be taken through a carefully crafted and connected story to all new and surprising environments across the living planet of Pandora. Make new friends, arm them to the teeth and fight alongside them on your relentless quest for revenge and redemption.

  • Gunzerker Leads a Cast of All-New Characters and All-New Classes: Step into the role of the Gunzerker, whose highly deadly skills allow him to dual-wield any two weapons found in the game. Not only that, you will build on that skill to do more things with two guns than you ever imagined possible. Dual machine guns? Cool. Dual rocket launchers? Of course! Dual Sniper Rifles? Sure, if that’s your thing! Want to try other styles? More tactical perhaps? There are multiple classes to choose from!
  • Dynamic Co-op online, split-screen and LAN: Share your adventures with friends both online and via LAN. Borderlands 2 features a seamless system enabling you to drop in and drop out of a campaign without ever having to restart the game. On top of that you can even take your new gear from any game to any other!
  • World Connected Story: You will find yourself left for dead in the frozen tundra of Pandora as you begin your quest of revenge and redemption. Expose the evil surrounding the Hyperion Corporation and take on the perpetrator of a universe-wide grand deception — the nefarious Hyperion CEO, Handsome Jack. (Oh, also: he’s stolen credit for the opening of the Vault.)
  • New Gun System: An entirely new take on the groundbreaking procedural system means millions upon millions of possible weapons. The variety and style of guns in Borderlands 2 is staggering, and you’ll see tons of new and innovative ways to engage foes on Pandora. Fire, electricity, corrosive acid, and much more will all be at your disposal as you fight your way through the Hyperion Corporation’s forces!
  • 87 Bazillion…Everything: In addition to the new gun system, you will lust after procedurally generated shields, grenades, Alien Artifacts, class mods and much, much more. And you thought the original Borderlands had a ton of loot!
  • Brand new environments on Pandora: Hunt through entirely brand new areas of Pandora that are more alive than ever! From the arctic tundra, through the dangerous grasslands, past the mysterious corrosive caverns to beyond, you’ll be surprised by the unpredictable world of Pandora at every turn!
  • Brand new enemies: A whole slew of new enemies are out there to kill you in Borderlands 2. Hulking, gorilla-like Bullymongs, vicious predatory Stalkers and the Hyperion mechanical army, run by Handsome Jack, are just some of the new enemies you will be facing off against on Pandora. New strategies will need to be created for every fight, as enemies now interact and aid each other to ensure you don’t get far in the world of Pandora.

Why I want it: I really enjoyed Borderlands when it came out. It was sort of like an FPS Diablo with guns. I got well into the game but then new things came along and dsitracted me. I got back into Borderlands recently and completed the main game (entirely co-op) a day or two ago. That experience moved my interest in the sequel from mild to massive. Then they released the trailer embedded above. How could you not want this game?

Tekken Unlimited Tag Tournament 2

(12/10/12)(PS3)

What they say: Not a lot, Tekken Tag Tournament 2 was supplanted by the announcement of the expanded Tekken Unlimited Tag Tournament 2 but there’s not a huge amount of english advertising blurb out at the moment. Anyway what do you really need to know? More Tekken, get in, etc.

Why I want it: Even if you dont regularly read my ramblings this list alone should indicate that I am a big fan of fighting games. Leaving aside how much sense that makes these days when I’ve no-one to play. Tekken is one of my favourite franchises and while Tekken Tag Tournament was not my favourit entry in the franchise (I just dont really get people’s love of tag fighting systems) I am more than happy to pick up more Tekken goodness. Especially as this looks jam-packed with shit, some of it pretty cool looking, e.g. the four player scramble mode.

Resident Evil 6

(20/11/12)(PS3)

What they say: It has been ten years since the Raccoon City incident and the President of the United States has decided to reveal the truth behind what took place in the belief that it will curb the current resurgence in bioterrorist activity. Due to be by the President’s side is his personal friend and Raccoon City survivor, Leon S. Kennedy, but when the venue suffers a bioterrorist attack, Leon is forced to face a President transformed beyond recognition and make his hardest ever decision. At the same time, Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance member Chris Redfield arrives in China, itself under threat of a bioterrorist attack. With no country safe from these attacks and the ensuing outbreaks, the entire world’s population is united by a common fear that there is no hope left.

In a first for the franchise, Resident Evil 6 sees series favorites Leon and Chris come together to face this unprecedented threat. They will be joined by new characters, each with their own unique perspective and involvement, in this relentless dramatic horror experience enacted on a global scale.

Why I want it: Largely because its the next major entry in the Resident Evil series. I’ve bought, played and enjoyed all of the major Resident Evil games from 2 onwards (I did play the first one until Ed swapped his PlayStation for a MegaCD).

One Piece: Pirate Warriors

(??/??/??)(PS3)

What they say:Not a lot as there’s no official english release announced yet.

One Piece: Pirate Warriors, known in Japan as One Piece: Kaizoku Musou (ワンピース 海賊無双 Wan Pīsu Kaizoku Musō?), is an action video game developed by Tecmo Koei and published by Namco Bandai for the PlayStation 3.[2] It was released on March 1, 2012 in Japan. The game was developed in commemoration of the 15th anniversary of the One Piece manga and anime franchise by Eiichiro Oda.

As with the rest of the franchise, Pirate Warriors follows the adventures of Monkey D. Luffy, a young boy who accidentally eats the Gum-Gum Fruit and organizes a diverse crew of pirates called the Straw Hats to search for the titular treasure. On his journey, Luffy makes several of friends, and battles a wide variety of villains.

Why I want it: Because One Piece is love? Because the game covers the entire length of the manga so far (over 650 issues, over 500 episodes of the anime)? Because the creator of said manga has written exclusive character expanding story arcs for the game? Because while the Dynasty Warrior games have stagnated their licenced franchises such as as Gundam Musou or Fist of the North Star Musou have been awesome? Because the game is making fairly big departures from the standard Dynasty Warriors formula? Because I’m still a fan of the Dynasty Warriors? Because the terrible 4Kids english intro to the anime is constantly stuck in my head? The game hasnt actually been announced for release outside Japan yet, but its fairly inevtiable as KOEI are actually pretty awesome with localising everything.

Dragons Crown

(??/??/??)(PS3/VITA)

What they say: The vast labyrinth lays spread out underground, the ruins situated below this citn nothing more than its entrace. Magic wielders, their hearts blighted by the dark, have used their spells to connect all the land’s ruins and monsters lairs into one. They search, tirelessly, for the legendary treasure they know is to be found. It lies, patiently, somewhere within the corridors. If it should fall into their hands, the entire land will be doused in blood before another day breaks. You know it as well as I – the Dragon’s Crown cannot, must not, come to them.

Gameplay

The player’s mission is to dive into the labyrinth, uncovering treasures and strengthening his mettle as he unlocs the secret behind the mighty dragon threathening the world. Simple controls allow anyone to get into the gameplay and enjoy the breathtaking action. Up to four players can connect from around the world to work together through the story, finish quests and hack through the dungeon in search of treasure.

Character raising, Item Collection, Guild Quests – The labyrinth is packed with treasures, items and weapons to power up your characters. From the huge numbers of quests to the endless worlds of dungeons gamers will never run out of things to do! In additon to long lasting gameplay, the game also features a vast array of character raising and customisation features. Explore the dungeons with your friends, discover power-boosting weapons and items, and create your very own original fighter!

Huge dragons and other overwhelming foes fill up the entire screen as they challenge your party to the hilt. Raise your character well and work with your buddies to take them down.

Up to four players work together via Playstation 3 and Playstation Vita

Why I want it: This game looks fucking beautiful, like all of Vanillaware’s other games the 2d animation is pretty amazing. Also, who the fuck doesnt love side-scrolling beat-em-ups? I just hope you can knock the shit out of the other players and steal those oh so precious food drops. How many friendships did Streets of Rage ruin?

Grand Knights History

(??/??/12)(VITA)

What they say: Well this was supposed to be out but has fallen prey to unexplained delays. As such I have no simple ad copy to throw in here, the horror. Oh wait, Amazon to the rescue:

Grand Knights History is a turn-based fantasy RPG from Vanillaware, the masters of beautiful hand-drawn 2D games. Featuring party-based combat, action in the game is based heavily on strategy and customization, where the player creates his/her own custom order of knights, controlling everything from basic appearance to job class, sub-class and weapon type. Even within the same job class, each weapon has its own unique skill set to master, and each character has his/her opportunities for training. Once your knights have been adequately prepared, you can take them online to fight against other knights created by other players in an all-out war for dominance of the entire land.

In the medieval land of Listia, home to the three competing nations of Union, Avalon and Logres, the ongoing battle for land and supremacy continues unabated. Knightly King Leon of Union, mystical Queen Muse of Avalon and immovable Emperor Fausel of Logres all lead their respective nations against one another, with years of bloodshed on all sides standing as proof of their eternal deadlock. Fueling this endless cycle of war is an equally endless cycle of knights. It’s the player’s sworn duty to captain a holy order of chevaliers from one of these three factions, recruiting squires and training them to full-fledged knighthood so they can put up a good fight for king (or queen, or emperor) and country on the field of battle. The war may never end, but as long as you have what it takes to lead, you can help shift the balance of power in your country’s favor.

Key Game Features

Breathtaking Hand-drawn 2D Graphics – From the masters of 2D, Vanillaware – the studio behind Muramasa: The Demon Blade and Odin’s Sphere – comes their next 2D fantasy masterpiece
Tons of Customization Options – From selecting the race, sex, appearance and individual voice of each knight, to assigning each knight’s job class, subclass and weapon type, players have an entire order of chevaliers at their disposal
Deep, Strategic Combat – Battle formations go beyond having melee fighters at the front and ranged fighters at the rear, as unique special abilities such as HP gain and individual weapon skills even within the same job class can mean the difference between victory and defeat
Innovative Online Play – Players can send up to 32 knights to join the continuous cycle of 30-hour-long wars online between the three factions, controlling some directly or just letting their soldiers fight automatically to contribute to their nation’s cause even without a constant Internet connection

Why I want it: Much as with Dragon’s Crown one of the key appeals here is Vanillaware’s awesome 2d visuals. These games just look so nice. I’m also interested in what I’ve heard about how they are doing turn based combat (i.e. the best kind of rpg combat). It’s unfortunate in one way that the release of this got delayed but its good in another way as I can now play it on my shiny new Vita.

Persona 4: The Golden

(??/??/12)(VITA)

What they say: Not a lot. This is another game that doesnt have an official localisation announced yet. But its only a matter of time considering every other Persona game has been localised by Atlus.

Persona 4: The Golden was announced in August 2011 as a remake of Persona 4 for the portable PlayStation Vita. It was originally planned by Atlus to be a PlayStation Portable title, similar to Persona 3 Portable, which would have required removing some of the features of the PlayStation 2 game. However, the Vita provides sufficient resources that has allowed Atlus to expand the game. It will be an expanded version of the PlayStation 2 title, adding new features and story elements to the game. A new character named Marie, voiced by Kana Hanazawa, will be added to the story, aiding the main party. Additional Personas, character outfits, and expanded spoken lines and anime cutscenes will be included. The game will support the wireless networking features of the Vita, allowing a player to call in help from other players that may be online at the same time to help in dungeon battles. Another new feature is a garden that produces items you can use in the various dungeons. The game is scheduled for a Japanese release on June 14, 2012; it is highly likely that the game will be released in other regions.

Why I want it: Persona 4 is one of my favourite games of all times. Literally in my Top 5. The idea of an enhanced port is the reason I bought the Vita. I’m not sure if I prefer the idea of it being portable to the idea of playing it on a big screen. Hopefully TV Out for the Vita will be sorted by then so I get the best of both worlds. Still, really looking forward to this, should look nice on the Vita, DAT SAMOLED+ Yo!

Guild Wars 2

(??/??/12) (PC)

What they say: For generations, war and chaos raged across the land of Tyria. Five great races competed and warred against each other, struggling to tip the balance of power in their favor.

Then the dragons woke.

The all-powerful beasts stirred from their millennial sleep under earth and sea. With their magical breath the dragons spread destruction and created legions of twisted slaves. A deathless dragon named Zhaitan raised the sunken nation of Orr, triggering earthquakes and tidal waves that destroyed entire cities across the Sea of Sorrows.

Zhaitan’s undead armies surged from the sea, hungry for the destruction of the five races of Tyria: the charr, a ferocious race of feline warriors; the asura, magical inventors of small size and great intellect; the norn, towering shapeshifters from the frigid northern lands; the sylvari, a mysterious young race of visionary plant folk; and the humans, an embattled but resilient people.

Now heroes from the five races must set aside ancient rivalries and stand together against their common enemies.

Magic, technology, and cold steel will determine the ultimate fate of the world.

Well thats the game background. You should go here and read the games design manifesto – http://www.arena.net/blog/guild-wars-2-design-manifesto.

Why I want it: Because as much as I whinge about them I do enjoy playing MMO’s. But I dont want to play the MMO’s we have anymore. I want something new. Which is why The Secret World is listed above. It looks like it has the two things I need a) awesomeness and b) something new. Guild Wars 2 looks like it has both of these. Though in an admittedly more familiar format. The Secret World looks like something new that I might lack whereas Guild Wars 2 looks like a new evolution of something I used to enjoy. My uncertainty over Whether Guild Wars 2 manages to achieve what it sets out to do is why this is a maybe.

Final Fantasy Type-0

(??/??/12)(VITA)

What they say: Nothing in english. This is another game that hasnt been officially announced for localisation but which “industry sources” have confirmed. Originally released for the PSP in Japan it was one of, it not the, most ambitious game on the PSP and supposedly the localisation is getting bumped up the Vita in the west.

Why I want it: Because it looks more akin to a “classic” Final Fantasy game than the recent console ones. The battle system is an interesting mix of real-time and ATB, it has controllable summons, high levels of customisation, a party of fourteen interesting looking characters. It has a complex and interesting looking story and has received nothing but praise from all reviews so far.

Dead State

(??/??/??)(PC)

What they say: Dead State is a compelling, high-tension RPG set at the beginning of the zombie apocalypse – a deadly illness is rampaging through the world, turning those infected into the walking dead. As society is beginning to fall apart, the player must organize a scant handful of allies, working on fortifying a shelter, scouting for food and supplies, making uncertain alliances with others, and attempting to hold together a group as humanity teeters on the brink of extinction. And although the zombies lurk as an ever present threat, the biggest obstacle to the player may just be other humans with the same goal: survival at any cost.

-Strategic turn-based gameplay: combines single-player character control with streamlined ally AI management, allowing for innovative party control

-Lush graphics: expansive maps and detailed character models brought to life through the power of Torque 3D

-Unique perspective: Combination of classic isometric perspective and field of view based on character line-of-sight allows for a tense and exciting game experience

-Open-ended gameplay: Large explorable world and non-linear storyline allow players to explore the landscape of Dead State freely, and encounter new challenges each time they play

-Engaging story and characters: Story and characters written by veteran game developer Brian Mitsoda (Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines) – features realistic and compelling dialogue and expertly-woven story elements

-Compelling player choice: Players not judged by a linear morality scale, but asked to make difficult and challenging decisions to keep themselves and their fellow survivors alive

-Complex and reactive character AI: Allies react realistically in combat situations, human enemies employ variable tactics against other character, zombies follow frightening mobbing behavior

-Innovative mechanics: Noise mechanic affects how zombies track prey by sound, resource management within player shelter allows for streamlined upgrades and organization of ally tasks

Why I want it: Are you bored of zombies? If your answer wasnt “Yes” then you are either a) wrong (because I am, and my opinions are the foundation your universe is built on), b) insane, c) really, really, really, really fond of zombies (to a point where you are banned from graveyards) or d) have been living in a cave. Zombies are played the fuck out, “Not-Zombies” are also played the fuck out. So why am I looking forward to a zombie game? Because this is the zombie game I always wanted. It sounds awesome. There’s an excellent extendedt review here – http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2010/08/25/a-blood-red-state-dead-state-revealed/

Zero Escape: Virtue’s Last Reward / Extreme Escape Adventure: Good People Die

(??/??/12)(VITA)

What they say: The localisation was only just announced, so not much. Wikipedia however:

Zero Escape: Virtue’s Last Reward (極限脱出ADV 善人シボウデス Kyokugen Dasshutsu ADV Zennin Shibou Desu?, lit. “Extreme Escape Adventure: Good People Die) is a visual novel developed by Chunsoft. It is a successor to the Nintendo DS title 999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors and is created by the same staff. The game contains full voice acting, and is rendered in 3D models, rather than 2D sprites like its predecessor. Though the story is self-contained, it contains several references to 999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors.

Sigma, the main character, is kidnapped and awakens in an elevator with a girl named Phi, who seems to know him. Zero 3, a talking rabbit, appears on a computer monitor in front of them, which causes them to flee the elevator; the pair find themselves in an abandoned warehouse alongside seven other people. Their goal is to escape the building. However, they find themselves enrolled in a game known as the Nonary Game: Ambidex Version, which relies on a system called “Bangle Points” (“BP”), which are won by cooperating with or betraying other players. A player is allowed to leave the warehouse if only they possess nine or more BP; however, if a player’s BP reach zero, they are killed by a lethal injection.

Why I want it: The name and the fact game theory gets on my tits and is a central element of this game. Game theory, particularly the prisoners dilema makes my brain all itchy. But on the other hand often produces stuff I like. This game looks really interesting, both in terms of gameplay and story. I have it’s sort of sequel, 999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors near the top of my “To play” pile. This one looks like it continues the weird action game/visual novel style play. Also, need games to justify buying a Vita.

Persona 4: The Ultimate in Mayonaka Arena

(??/??/12)(PS3)

What they say: Developed in collaboration with genre masters Arc System Works, Persona 4 Arena uses gorgeous, handdrawn, high definition 2D animestyle fighters and colorful, overthetop special effects to bring to life a roster of fighters from the criticallyacclaimed, highly popular Persona 3 and Persona 4. Backed up by an original, hardcore fighting engine from one of the most respected 2D fighting game developers in the industry, Persona 4 Arena represents the biggest, most noteworthy expansion of the esteemed series to date.

  • A COLLABORATION WITH GENRE MASTERS ARC SYSTEM WORKS – Developed in partnership with the studio responsible for fan favorite fighting games BlazBlue and Guilty Gear.
  • CONSOLEEXCLUSIVE FEATURES AND CONTENT – The home console release will include a number of new features over the Arcade version, including a full Story mode and online multiplayer!
  • CHARACTERS AND SETTINGS FROM AWARD WINNING PERSONA 3 & 4 – Beautiful, handdrawn 2D animestyle sprites of characters based on the awardwinning Persona 3 and 4 roleplaying games, along with eyepopping stages and special effects, are a special treat for both ATLUS and genre fans.
  • ORIGINAL, HARDCORE FIGHTING MECHANICS – True to Arc System Works tradition, P4A looks and feels like nothing else out there. Each fighter has attacks tied to their Persona, their summoned inner strength, adding to the depth and complexity.

Why I want it: Persona 3:FES is literatlly my favourite game of all time. Persona 4 is in my Top 5 favourite games of all time. Fighing games are one of my two favourite genres. This is a fighting game continuing the story of Persona 4 and featuring characters from Persona 3 and 4. I’m not on the hype train. I’m driving it.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown

(??/??/12)(PC)

What they say:XCOM: Enemy Unknown will place you in control of a secret paramilitary organization called XCOM. As the XCOM commander, you will defend against a terrifying global alien invasion by managing resources, advancing technologies, and overseeing combat strategies and individual unit tactics. The original X-COM is widely regarded as one of the best games ever made and has now been re-imagined by the strategy experts at Firaxis Games. XCOM: Enemy Unknown will expand on that legacy with an entirely new invasion story, enemies and technologies to fight aliens and defend Earth. You will control the fate of the human race through researching alien technologies, creating and managing a fully operational base, planning combat missions and controlling soldier movement in battle.

  • Strategy Evolved: XCOM: Enemy Unknown couples tactical turn-based gameplay with incredible action sequences and on-the-ground combat.
  • Strategic Base: Recruit, customize and grow unique soldiers and manage your personnel. Detect and intercept the alien threat as you build and expand your XCOM headquarters.
  • Tactical Combat: Direct soldier squads in turn-based ground battles and deploy air units such as the Interceptor and Skyranger.
  • Worldwide Threat: Combat spans the globe as the XCOM team engages in over 70 unique missions, interacting and negotiating with governments around the world.

If you want something better than ad copy then I would suggest the three exhaustive interviews/previews on Rock, Paper, Shotgun – first one here

Why I want it: Because I wrote twelve thousand words on how games like this dont get made by major studios any more and then a few weeks before submission Firaxis announced this? Because playing the original X-COM demo over and over was one of the most fun things I’ve done on a PC? Because I have run out of energy and writing lists of questions is easier than forumlating my thoughts properly? I enjoyed X-COM and I really enjoyed it’s legacy, western turn based tactics/tactical role-playing games. It’s not my favourite game ever, to be honest it wouldnt even make top 25. But I am really interested to see what Firaxis are going to with this and initial reports seem awesome.

Xenonauts

(??/??/12)(PC)

What they say:Xenonauts is a single-player PC strategy game. Primarily a strategy game, it straddles several sub-genres and so we’ve resorted to describing it as a ‘planetary defence simulator’. The player is in control of an organisation tasked with defending the planet against extraterrestrial invasion; establishing bases across the world that house the aircraft, scientists, technicians and soldiers that will be used to protect humanity. The skies must be defended against alien incursion, while ground teams must be sent into combat to capture crashed UFOs or cleanse terror sites to retain the confidence of funding nations and capture new extraterrestrial artefacts and technology to study. As the game goes on, the player researches the captured artefacts to unlock new units and battlefield technology to use in the fight against the aliens while slowly discovering their origins, eventually learning enough to defeat the alien invasion – assuming that they have not already been overrun!

The game is heavily inspired by the classic X-Com / UFO: Enemy Unknown, released in the mid-90s by the now-defunct Mythos / Microprose. It is not a straight remake; though the core mechanics remain similar much has changed or been updated – so much so, in fact, that we prefer the term ‘reimagining’ to remake’.

The game consists of three main elements, the Geoscape, Air Combat and Ground Combat. Full details on each are explained on their respective overview pages.

Why I want it: XCOM Enemy Unknown certainly sounds awesome. But as the designers themsevles admit, it is going to be quite different from the original XCOM game. The purist within me rebels a little at that so its a good thing that Xenonauts is going to be a much more faithful ehancment of the original.

Games I’ll probably play

If I was feeling like a dick (and when am I not?) I would suggest that these are the more popular and creatively bankrupt games and that they’ll be bought in bulk BY YOU SHEEP!. But that’s going a bit far. This section does feature a dis-proportinate number of “Triple A” titles though. I guess I’m drifting away from a place where mainstream games appeal to me. Games listed here are ones I will no doubt play but which are marred by one thing or another (quite often my own bizarre opinion).

NeverDead

(03/02/12)(PS3)

What they say: The player controls a wise cracking human demon hunter named Bryce, who was cursed with immortality five-hundred years ago by a demon king. Now in modern times, he hunts demons for money and revenge and continues his hunting escapades with a female private investigator in order to stop a demonic invasion that has nearly destroyed the city.

The character that the player controls will be immortal, so the character will be able to survive taking injuries. The player will also be able to cut off their body parts and get them to attack enemies. The player will have to collect removed limbs. The player will be able to cause large objects to crush them when they are near enemies, which will harm the enemies but not the player. Gameplay will also feature puzzle elements. A female partner will assist the player, however she will not be immortal and so the player will have to take damage to protect her.

Why I want it: Third person action games are unfortunately so omni-present as to make the genre rather dull. Thus to garner my interest and play time the game needs to have something to make it stand out, whether thats a setting I liked (SpaceMarine), big name developers (Shadows of the Damned) or (as is the case here) a unique gameplay mechanic. The ability to dismember yourself and the fact your character is actually immortal in both the setting and mechanics of the game is fairly novel and is more than enough to make me interested in the game. This is another game that is actually available, but unfortunately public response has not been positive enough for me to fork out full price for it, though I will be keeping an eye out for it cheap.

Mass Effect 3

(09/03)(PC)

What they say: Earth is burning. Striking from beyond known space, a race of terrifying machines have begun their destruction of the human race. As Commander Shepard, an Alliance Marine, your only hope for saving mankind is to rally the civilizations of the galaxy and launch one final mission to take back the earth.

Why I want it: How much I want this is currently up for debate. I loved the first game. It was excellent, but there was room for improvement. So to say that I was looking forward to Mass Effect 2 is something of an understatement. Then Mass Effect 2 came along and felt almost too different from the first game. Up until recently I thought I hated it. But then I went back and read the mini-review I posted just after I completed it and it seems I actually did like it. Along with that unsettling revelation I had been reading various play threads about it and had a weird urge to play it again. So I picked up the complete version of the game (all DLC) on the PC and I’m planning to play it this week. So when Im done I’ll know if I’m interested or very interested in this game.

Tales of Graces F

(13/03/12)(PS3)

What they say: The newest entry in one of the most fanatically followed series today, Tales of Graces f redefines the fantasy RPG genre with its blend of anime-inspired graphics, enthralling depth of story and fast paced, strategic battles. Set amidst the conflict of three kingdoms competing for planetary dominance, the story follows Asbel Lhant and his friends on their adventure to protect the bonds between them, unaware that in time, their quest will shake the world itself.

Experience over 50 hours of gameplay on the PlayStation® 3 – Go deep into the story and world of Tales of Graces f with more than 40 hours of core gameplay. After the main quest, take on the Lineage & Legacies epilogue, featuring another 10+ hours of story! Explore new dungeons, fight fierce new monsters, and wield newly created spells, attacks, and techniques!

Stunning Visuals – High Definition graphics and stylish cell shading bring attention to the detailed anime art style. Beautiful and spacious environments give players the freedom to explore a truly open world.
Master New Combat Styles – Command the “Style Shift – Linear Motion Battle System” to freely switch between fighting styles and deftly evade enemy attacks. Activate “Accelerate Mode” to use powerful new techniques and bring the fight to enemies like never before!
Unique Multiplayer System – Enlist the help of up to 3 friends to fight by your side! Players can join the battle at any time simply by plugging in a controller!

Why I want it: The Tales series is the only long running high profile JRPG series that I’ve never really gotten into. I would like to, but it never really seems to work out. I totally missed the series on the PSX and on the PS2 I tried getting into it a few times but for some reason never could (I think I got half way through Tales of Abyss twice and for some reason never finished it, which is odd as I really liked the story and characters). I missed it on the DC, GC and Wii. On current gen consoles the series has not fared very well on the localisation front and while I tried out Vesperia (which was awesome) for some reason I couldnt stick with it. So I really want to get on board and the good news with Tales of Graces f is that the combat system is supposed to be awesome. This is good as the combat system was my least favourite bit of prior tales games. Unfortunately the visuals are a bit too kiddy and cutsey for me and thats why its moved from definite to possible purchase. Might just finally fix my 360 and play Vesperia (as the enhanced PS3 version is clearly never coming out in English – which is why I didnt play it originally, guess I did remember).

Max Payne 3

(15/05/12)(PC)

What they say:Max Payne 3 continues the tale of former New York City detective, Max Payne. Still haunted by the memories of his traumatic past, Max begins a new life working private security protecting a wealthy industrialist and his family in Sao Paulo, Brazil. When gangs target the family under his protection, Max is forced to fight to save his clients and clear his name, in a bid to, once and for all, rid himself of the demons that have tortured him for far too long. Picking up where the release of Max Payne 2 from series creator Remedy Entertainment left off, Max Payne 3 is a true cross-studio collaboration between Rockstar Games’ global development teams. The game utilizes cutting edge technology for a seamless, cinematic action experience, incorporating the latest advances in Natural Motion physics and a brand new iteration of Rockstar’s own Rockstar Advanced Game Engine. The result offers highly-refined gameplay, with an extensive range of realistic weaponry, an intelligent cover system and sophisticated Bullet-Time mechanics. In addition to an expansive single-player campaign, Max Payne 3 will be the first title in the series to introduce an addictive multiplayer experience. Max Payne 3 promises to deliver a dark, gritty action experience that is sure to satisfy newcomers and fans to the historic franchise.

Why I want it: I am not a fan of Rockstar. I find their releases over-hyped and ultimately disappointing. So I’m feeling a bit of trepidation about how they have handled Max Payne. But all initial reports are pointing at it being awesome. I really enjoyed the first two games, the second in particular was an enjoyable noir tale and managed to be enjoyable beyond the series key gimmick (bullet time). I’d be surprised in any game managed to make bullet time more enjoyable than Stranglehold but I’ll be only too happy to be proved wrong. Even if it isnt as good I’ll be happy for a few hours of hard boiled two gun slow mo action.

Lollipop Chainsaw

(19/06/12)(PS3)

What they say:outbreak. With her wickedly awesome chainsaw in hand, Juliet slices, dices and splits her way through hordes of the undead, but soon realizes the horde is only the opening act to a festival of zombie rock lords determined to kill the chainsaw-wielding cheerleader. Lollipop Chainsaw is being developed by GRASSHOPPER MANUFACTURE, led by celebrated game developer Goichi Suda (aka SUDA 51) and featuring the musical compositions of the renowned Akira Yamaoka. In addition, Hollywood director and writer James Gunn (Super, Slither, Dawn of the Dead, Tromeo and Juliet) has brought his cult humor and edgy storytelling to Lollipop Chainsaw’s script.

Killer Heroine – Juliet Starling is an 18-year-old student with a dark secret – zombie-hunting with a killer chainsaw in hand. Juliet must balance the drama of high school while carrying out her zombie-hunting lineage.
Gameplay Design – Celebrated game developer SUDA 51 brings his unique creative style and vision to the gameplay design, taking players through a wild ride of zombies, chainsaws, and rainbows.
Edgy Storyline – Through an adapted script by James Gunn, Juliet must uncover the root of a colossal zombie outbreak at her school, San Romero High, but soon realizes the horde is only the opening act to a festival of zombie rock lords determined to take her down.
Combat/Weapons – Players will hone their cheerleading acrobatics and chainsaw skills to string together devastating combo moves, taking out hordes of the undead.
Zombie Rock Lords – San Romero High’s zombie jocks and undead faculty are the least of Juliet’s concerns when she soon realizes that she faces a bigger challenge, zombie rock lords that add a new beat’ to SUDA 51’s over-the-top boss battles.
Head Bangin’ Music – With original music created by popular video game composer Akira Yamaoka (best known for the Silent Hill series) and collaboration with a yet-to-be announced artist, Lollipop Chainsaw features a soundtrack that’s to die for! In addition to original music, Juliet’s playlist will also include familiar songs from various musical genres.

Why I want it: Because it looks hilarious and mental and I’m hoping that finally one of suda51’s game’s will click with me. It also has a fairly impressive staff working on it. But mainly because it looks mental.

Bioshock Infinite

(19/10/12)(PC)

What they say:BioShock® Infinite, developed by Irrational Games, won over 75 editorial awards at this year’s E3, including the Game Critics Awards’ Best of Show.

In this first-person shooter set in 1912, the player assumes the role of former Pinkerton agent Booker DeWitt, who is sent to Columbia to rescue Elizabeth, a young woman imprisoned there since childhood. He develops a relationship with Elizabeth, augmenting his abilities with hers so they may escape from a city literally falling from the sky. DeWitt learns to fight foes in high-speed Sky-Line battles, engage in combat both indoors and amongst the clouds, and harnesses the power of dozens of new weapons and abilities.

Why I want it: I thought the first Bioshock game was awesome, great game, great story, great athmosphere. I thought Bioshock 2 was shit. The only good thing’s about it were the design for the Big Sisters and the world revealed in the ending. The game itself was dull as fuck. Infinite is by the original creation team and I’m expecting great things. But the spectre of Bioshock 2 stops me really getting on board.

The Last of Us

(31/12/12)(PS3)

What they say:Abandoned cities reclaimed by nature. A population decimated by a modern plague. Survivors are killing each other for food, weapons; whatever they can get their hands on. Joel, a brutal survivor, and Ellie, a young teenage girl who’s braver and wiser beyond her years, must work together if they hope to survive their journey across the US.

Developed by Naughty Dog, creators of the best-selling UnchartedTM series
Genre-defining experience that blends survival and action elements
Character driven story about a population decimated by a modern plague

Why I want it: I’ve been a big fan of Naughty Dog since Rings of Power back on the Megadrive and while I did feel the Uncarted series went in a direction I wasnt super fond of they were still great games and so I’m looking forward to seeing what they can do with a more gritty setting. Hopefully they really play up the survival aspects. I also hope they avoid the usual post apocalyptic cliches but I’m calling it now – cannibals.

Warlock – Master of the Arcane

What they say:Warlock: Master of the Arcane is a new turned-based strategy game set in the fantastical world of Ardania, popularized in Majesty franchise. Warlock: Master of the Arcane invites players to take on the role of the Great Mage and build a powerful magical empire, giving mightly mages the ability to control armies and wield magic to wage war against another, as they compete with other wizards for the title of Warlock.

Features

  • Research and master dozens of spells, conjure strong enchantments and find out powerful spell combinations
  • Use the forces of three races, along with summons and wild creatures
  • Innovating city management system with less routine actions
  • Epic battles with large armies marching across the landscape

Why I want it: This game wasnt even really on my radar until I read the big preview of it over on Rock, Paper, Shotgun. I really liked what I read. I have heard great things about Master of Magic but never played it and its a bit too retro for me to bother with these days. I’ve also failed to really get into Civilisation series since Alpha Centauri (which I know isnt a “proper” Civ game). This game looks like it combines and improves on elements of both. So I’m hoping I can get into this.

Skullgirls

(??/??/12)(PS3)

What they say:Skullgirls is a fast-paced, 2D fighting game developed by Reverge Labs and lead by tournament champ Mike “Mike Z” Zaimont and artist Alex “o_8” Ahad.

Drawing on the best features the genre has to offer, Skullgirls is designed to be a tournament-grade fighter while remaining approachable and engaging for the casual player.

Features

  • Skullgirls features the most frames of animation per character of any fighting game, hand-drawn at high resolution and enhanced by real-time lighting courtesy of a powerful 3D engine
  • Classic six-button play gives characters a huge variety of attacks and special moves
  • With the Variable Tag Battle system, players can pit mismatched teams of one, two or three characters against one another
  • Custom Assists let you outfit your team with a huge variety of attacks for nearly endless strategic possibilities
  • A robust anti-infinite combo system keeps competitive play free of abusive tactics
  • Robust tutorials and an AI designed to teach eases new players into the traditionally intimidating fighting game genre and helps you improve from there
  • Official GGPO netcode ensures lag-free fighting online
  • A stunning soundtrack by Castlevania: Symphony of the Night composer Michiru Yamane draws you into the game’s unique “Dark Deco” world

Why I want it: I was really interested in this game. I’m a fan of the games design goals and I think it addresses a number of issues endemic to the genre which need to be addressed. It’s also coming out on PSN/XBLA so its not going to break the bank and I’ll probably pick it up to support the games ideas. But I have to say, the art deco design aesthetic does nothing for me and to be honest I find it off-putting and its killed a lot of my excitement about this game.

Dishonored

(??/??/12)(PC)

What they say: You are the once-trusted bodyguard of the Empress. Framed for her murder and driven by revenge, you must become an infamous assassin, known only by the disturbing mask that has become your calling card. As you navigate a world torn apart by plague and oppressed by a government armed with strange new technologies, the truth behind your betrayal is as murky as the waters surrounding the city. The choices you make will determine the fate of the world, but no matter what happens your old life is gone forever.

Why I want it: I like cyberpunk. I like weird alternate futures with aristrocartic systems. I like killing people from a first person perspective. I was really looking forward to Deus Ex: Human Revolution. But it failed to deliver. I’m hoping that Dishonored will do a better job of providing me with a dark futuristic FPS stealth/stab-em-up.

X-Rebirth

(??/??/12)(PC)

What they say:In the distant future, the X universe faces a period of profound and irrevocable change. While the universe stumbles towards an uncertain future, countless adventures await as new enemies rise in search of power. Enter a young adventurer and his unlikely female ally traveling in an old, battered ship with a glorious past – two people alone against the galaxy, playing a key part in the events to come. The fate of the universe rests in the hands of the player…

X Rebirth represents a spectacular new beginning for the X series, offering loyal fans and newcomers alike a vast, vivid and extremely detailed universe to explore throughout the game. Varied gameplay elements such as action-packed space combat, detailed trading mechanics and high-speed space exploration with fast travel allow players to experience a truly unique space saga that will keep them hooked for dozens of hours. X Rebirth features a whole new user experience – it is easier than ever to start with, and remains as deep as fans expect it.

Why I want it:Frontier Elite II was one of the most immersive video game experiences I’ve ever had. Traversing that procedurally generated galaxy ate an entire summer holidays. I’d love to play something like that again, even if I’m not sure experiences like that can be replicated I’m happy to use X-Rebirth to try.

Masters of the Broken World

(??/??/12)(PC)

What they say: “Offering global, strategic and tactical levels of gameplay, MBW features the traditional “good vs. evil” decision dilemma where consequences of player’s choices significantly influence the outcome of the main game. Rebellions are best put out with a few legions of zombies… but if you’ll need this particular province at a later time, you’ll live to regret some of your easy decisions.”

Or, much like Dragon Commander below, lots, but not in easily copyable form. The Rock, Paper, Shotgun overview here – http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2011/08/11/masters-of-the-broken-world-revealed/ and the gameplay video below should give a good idea what its about.

Why I want it: Because the phrase “Fantasy non-linear turn-based strategy” gives me a weird mental erection? I just think this looks interesting and has the potential to be awesome.

Dragon Commander

(??/??/12)(PC)

What they say:Lots. But one of it in easy to copy advertising blurb. The Destructoid preview here – http://www.destructoid.com/preview-dragon-commander-209411.phtml gives a fairly good preview of the game.

Why I want it: To be honest the trailer and the name sold me on this. I get to command dragons fighting giant fucked up magical air fleets? Take my money now. I’ve always wanted a decent “Play as a dragon” game (Lair you let me down) and hopefully this will be it. Also the dragons have jetpacks and you transform into one (a dragon, not a jetpack). There’s also a strategic meta level game as well. This just sounds great.

Ni no Kuni

(??/??/12)(PS3)

What they say: Ni no Kuni (二ノ国?, lit. Second Country, also called The Another World) is a role-playing video game co-developed by Japanese developer Level-5 and the first videogame made by anime company Studio Ghibli[1] for the Nintendo DS and later PlayStation 3. The story of Ni no Kuni revolves around thirteen-year-old Oliver, a resident of Hotroit City, whose mother, Arie, suddenly dies after rescuing him from drowning.[11] A doll, given to Oliver by his mother, is brought to life from his tears and reveals itself to be a male fairy named Shizuku, who gives Oliver a book that allows him to use the power of magic and enter the world of “Ni no Kuni,” a reality parallel to his own. In Ni no Kuni, Shizuku says, Oliver may be able to find his mother, Arie.[11] Using the newfound power of magic, Oliver and Shizuku venture into Ni no Kuni. There, he befriends Maru, Gyro, and other alternate versions of people (and animals) he knows

Why I want it: Because while I think they are over-rated by people who dont know any better Studio Ghibli’s stuff generally looks pretty awesome and this game is no exception. Also, I like JRPG’s. But mainly its the eye candy.

Diablo III

(??/??/12)(PC)

What they say: Two decades have passed since the demonic lords, Diablo, Mephisto, and Baal, set out across the world of Sanctuary on a vicious rampage, twisting humanity to their unholy will. Yet for those who battled the Prime Evils, the memory fades slowly.

When Deckard Cain returns to the ruins of Tristram Cathedral seeking clues to defeat new stirrings of evil, a fiery harbinger of doom falls from the heavens, striking the very ground where Diablo once entered the world. This fire from the sky reawakens ancient evils and calls the heroes of Sanctuary to defend the mortal world against the rising powers of the Burning Hells once again.

Diablo III is an upcoming dark fantasy/horror-themed action role-playing game developed by Blizzard, making it the third installment in the Diablo franchise. The game, which features elements of the hack and slash and “dungeon roaming” genres, was first announced on June 28, 2008, at Blizzard’s World Wide Invitational in Paris, France.

Why I want it: It’s Diablo 3. That’s it basically. Even if they are just glorified skinner box’s the first two installments in the franchise ate my time like very little else before or since (the only things that match up are Frontier Elite and regular sex – neither of which I have access to any longer). The multiplayer options are also appealing (though perhaps not with strangers). Unfortunately I really dont think this will get released this year.

Game’s I’m not likely to play but may

(ooh snappy title)

These are games that I’ve very little interest in but will probably end up playing because a) everybody else will and I like to have something to base my ranting on or b) just because. Some games are also here because there simply isnt enough information available at the moment to decide how interested I am.

Hitman Absolution

(??/??/12)(PC)

What they say: HITMAN ABSOLUTION follows Agent 47, a cold-blooded assassin, who takes on his most dangerous contract to date. Betrayed by those he once trusted – and now hunted by the police – he suddenly finds himself at the center of a dark conspiracy and must embark on a personal journey through a corrupt and twisted world.

Why I want it: Because the first level of the first Hitman game was awesome and nothing after that really lived up to it. Which is why I’m only cautiously optimistic about this rather than genuinely interested.

Of Orcs and Men

(??/??/12)(PC or PS3)

What they say:Of Orcs and Men first puts you into the role of an elite Orc soldier from the legendary legion of Bloodjaws, a league of warriors deeply involved in the war opposing the Orcs and Goblins on one side to their persecutors, Humankind. As a veteran warrior who has seen the most brutal of battles, you are appointed by the Orc commander to complete a mission that could change the course of the war: kill the one man responsible for all of this bloodshed, the one who has, for years, exhorted the human masses to loath and fight the green-skinned people: the Emperor himself.

A Goblin will soon join you to aid you in your mission… he is everything the Orc is not. But you find that this works to your advantage as you fight on the battleground and off. Making advantage of their natural traits, they have their own skill trees you will develop. While the Orc focuses on power, reflecting his incredible strength, the Goblin will benefit from darker powers and stealth abilities, making him the perfect assassin.

From the filthy alleys at the foot of the Great Wall, to the depths of the Empire of Men, your two infiltrated heroes will face the greatest dangers through their epic quest. They will commune with the Wizards, fight the assassins and soldiers of the Empire of Men, and oppose the powerful Sisters of Laments.

As the world falls into chaos and you face a cruel and merciless humanity bent on eternal persecution of Orcs and Goblins, your unlikely duo will have one last chance to change the course of History and, hopefully, bringing peace between your peoples.

Why I want it: Because the main character looks like a badass and ever since Hellscream in Warcraft 3 I have been a sucker for badass Orc’s.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance

What they say:The main character, Raiden, was once feared as the child soldier “Jack the Ripper” on the front lines of the First Liberian Civil War. Now, his combat mastery is channeled through a cyborg body as the strikes from his high-frequency blade slice even massive assault drones in two.

Raiden is contracted for VIP protection, military training and other duties by PMSCs (Private Military and Security Companies) in a developing country piecing itself back together after a bloody civil war. Little does he know that the stage is set for a clash with an enigmatic force of countless cyborgs.
Reborn at the hands of PlatinumGames, METAL GEAR RISING: REVENGEANCE pits cyborg against cyborg in battle that blazes past every human limit!

Why I want it: Because its name is fucking ridiculous. MGS2 was a pretty big disappointment and the majority of that disappointment was caused by Raiden. Now I do feel MGS4 redeemed the character and he was pretty cool in it but I’m not sure if I want an entire game as him. On the other hand the sword stuff does look cool. On the third (probably robotic) hand “Revengeance”.

Transformers: The Fall of Cybertron

(??/??/12)(PS3)

What they say:Transformers: Fall of Cybertron transports you to the final days of the planet Cybertron where you will experience the darkest hours of the apocalyptic war between the Autobots and Decepticons. Embark on an adrenaline-fueled journey through a wide range of missions and massive environments designed around each character’s unique abilities. With the stakes higher than ever before, you play as a variety of Transformers, including Grimlock’s nearly indestructible T-Rex form and the legendary Combaticons forming into the colossal Bruticus. Fight through both sides of the Transformers’ most epic battles leading to their legendary exodus from their homeworld. Transformers: Fall of Cybertron allows you to go head-to-head as Autobots and Decepticons with its multi-player online mode. Create your own personalized character and weaponry with the most advanced and in-depth customization ever before seen in a Transformers video game.

Why I want it: One word: Grimlock. Some more words: I played the sequel to this briefly and enjoyed it but didnt play it enough to form a solid opinion. I heard it was good, but Sean said that and he loves Portal 2 so what does he know? If I see it cheap I’ll pick it up. The customisation does sound cool, also, as mentioned, Grimlock.

Papo & Yo

(??/??/12)(PS3)

What they say: Not a huge amount. Well actually there are a few designer diary’s from the main designer but they are sort of disturbing as the designer talks about how the monster is supposed to be his often abusive father and such.

Why I want it: The trailer is catchy and I like the look of the pink rhino. I’m more curious about it than eager to pick it up.

Valkyria Chronicles III

(?????)(PSP)

What they say: Valkyria Chronicles III (戦場のヴァルキュリア3 Unrecorded Chronicles, Senjō no Varukyuria Surī Unrecorded Chronicles?, “Valkyria of the Battlefield 3: Unrecorded Chronicles”) is a tactical role-playing game, developed and published by Sega for the PlayStation Portable.

Occurring in the same time frame as the first game, Valkyria Chronicles III is a side story that follows the exploits of an unwanted and castigated Gallian Army squad during the Imperial invasion of 1935. Contrasting the previous games’ bright outlook and recognition for their protagonists, VCIII explores the themes of being outcast and the search for redemption. As described by its catchphrase, the game tells “The tale of nameless soldiers who, on the verge of despair, changed history.”

Why I want it: Because Valkyria Chronicles was awesome. It’s one of the best games on the PS3 and one of the few games in recent years that felt genuinely fresh. I can only assume SEGA hates me and thats why its realesed Valkyria Chronicles II and this on the PSP (a device which I own but am seemingly incapable of completing a game on). I still have yet to play the second game. Actually as I write this I think I’m going to drop this down a notch. While I would like to support the franchise I still havent played the second one (which is supposedly awesome) and I dont know when I will. RELEASE THESE ON A PROPER FUCKING CONSOLE SEGA! This is supposed to have quite a grim story, which when it comes to computer games generally means full of wangst and pseudo maturity. But the story in the first game was pretty decent so I’ll give it a chance. Oh cool, its actually set in the same period as the first game.

Oh and like a few other games listed here this hasnt officially had a localisation announced. With the Vita coming out in a month or so chances dont look good.

Fever dreams

Games whos existence has been announced but little else. There’s not much to go on for these other than a name and a rough idea and the majority of them are unlikely to make it out in 2012.

Carmageddon Reincarnation

What’s the deal: Nothing, well, not nothing. But more or less nothing. The website says it exists but thats about it, no real details or screenshots/videos. Nostalgia makes me want this though

Ravensdale

(??/??/12)(PC)

What’s the deal: “Ravensdale is a fast paced fantasy action game in a very unique steam powered setting featuring outrageously over-powered gadgetry. The player will seek out high pressure steam outlets, to supercharge his equipment, allowing him to pulverize his adversaries and overcome the obstacles on his path.”

I like both steampunk and action rpg’s and I find it amusing that its called Ravensdale (which is five minutes up the road from me). Hard to say anything more at this point as theres little to nothing to go on

Prison Architect

(??/??/??)(PC)

What’s the deal: There’s not a huge amount of information available about this at the moment. Mainly this preview video and this blog post. It basically appears to be Theme Hospital but with a maximum security prison as opposed to a hospital. Which sounds both grimly amusing and intriguing.

Cartel

(??/??/??)(PC)

What’s the deal: This is basically Paradox’s take on the classic version of Syndicate. There arent a lot of details available at the moment, nor even an official release. All the details are from interviews such as this one – and they sound awesome. I loved the original Syndicate and was a big fan of Syndicate Wars as well (though I feel it failed to capture the brilliance of the first game). I am most definitely interested in seeing Paradox, a company who’s output appears a lot on this list, taking a crack at Syndicate.
