(Very) Brief Thoughts on the Fall 2013 anime season

Even though a lot of these shows are starting or have started to air this is still an extremely advanced preview for me as I can’t shake my inability to watch anything other than completed shows (WEEK TO WEEK IS FOR PEONS!).

First things first, a nice visual overview of the current season along with summaries of each show courtesy of Neregate

Want to Watch

Coppellion

The story is set in 2036, after radioactive contamination from a nuclear accident has put Tokyo under a blockade. Three high school girls have been sent to this dead city. Thanks to genetic engineering the three girls have been impervious to radioactivity since birth. They form a special forces unit, codenamed “Coppelion”, in the 3rd Division of Japan’s Groun Self-Defence Force.

I like the look of the character designs and who doesnt love post-apocalyptic special forces?

Kyoukai no Kanta

The story follows a high school sophmore named Akihito Kanbara. Although the boy appears human he is half yomu and invulnerable to wounds because he can heal quickly. One day, Akihito meets freshman Mirai Kuriyama when it seems she is about to jump from the school rooftop. Mirai is isolated because of her ability to manipulate blood, which is unique even among members of the spirit world. Disturbing events begin to unfold after Akihito saves Mirai.

I’m a sucker for modern day supernatural action stuff. Especially when it involves cool powers. The power to control blood is a pretty sweet one that oddly enough doesnt pop up as often as you’d expect. My main interest in stuff like this is partially the story and partially the world itself.

KILL la KILL

The story centers around two firecely fighting schoolgirls, Ryuuko Matoi and Satsuki Kiryuuin. On a campus ruled by force, a transfer student wielding a Basami sword brings about upheaval.

There is a crazy amount of hype surrounding this show and the reviews of the first episode have been almost universally positive. Which is unsurprising considering Kazuki Nakashim (Gurren Lagann, Nodame Cantabile:Finale, Re: Cutie Honey) is supervising and writing the scripts, and animator Sushio (key animator on Gurren Lagann and new Evangelion fils, character designer on Engage Planet Kiss Dum) is designing the characters. I’m hoping its not a case of the emperor’s new clothes.

Gingitsune

The story is set at a small Shinto harvest shrine dating back to the Edo period. Makoto Saeki lives with her father (the head priest of the shrine) and Gintarou, a kitsune (fox spirit) who happens to be a messenger for the gods. Makoto also happens to be the only one who can see the shrine’s kitsune.

I quite like slice of life stuff and the original manga got very good reviews so looking forward to this.

Samurai Flamenco

Masayoshi Hazama has decided to become the superhero Samurai Flamenco in spite of having no special abilities or modifications. Hidenori Goto is a police officer who learns his secret identity by chance, which causes him all sorts of trouble.

I fucking love the sound of this. Cant wait (but will).
Blazblue Alter Memory – Since I’ve accepted that I’ll never really have a chance to play fighting games anymore I’m nuch more interested in the (confusing as fuck) story of BlazBlue than the game so its nice that an anime has come out.

May Watch

Outbreak Company – An otaku missionary who’s job is convert a fantasy world to the wonders of moe. On the surface sounds like it could be amusing fun but if its mis-handled it’ll be tedious pandering. I’m hoping its more the former than the latter.

Golden Time – I like romantic comedy’s I dislike amnesia based storylines because theyre often poorly handled. But I’m willing to give it a chance.

Log Horizon – A blatant cash-in on the success of Sword Art Online. But I really enjoyed Sword Art Online so I’ll give this a watch.

I couldn’t become a hero, so I reluctantly decided to get a job – I love the title but this feels like another go around of The Devil is a Part-timer and from initial reviews a pretty shitty one.

Strike the Blood – I have to watch at least one show with a ridiculous title and if it involves vampires and modern supernatural action all the better.

Phi Brain – Kami no Puzzle 3rd Season – I enjoyed the first half of season one but never got around to finishing it for some reason. Must get back to it.

Yozakura Quartet – Enjoyed the first season and the manga its based on. Probably going to give this a go.

Aoki Hagane no Arpeggio – The premise for this sounds great but theres just something about it thats putting me off. Though it does make me recall Mars Daybreak which was fucking quality and sadly underappreciated.

Meganebu! – Could be funny or could be cringetacular shit.

Yowamushi Pedal – Looks like a fairly standard sports drama with an otaku twist. Though I dislike the real thing I do enjoy sports drama so this’ll no doubt make it into rotation.

Tokyo Ravens – Supernatural action: check. Onmyoudou: check. Micheal will watch it: check.

Kakumei Valvrave Second Season – Really liked the look of the first. When this ends I can finally watch it.

pupa – This has the potential to be good or to be misery porn.

Unlikely to watch

Koroshiya-san: The Hired Gun – Absurdist comedy can be tricky to get right.

Galilei Donna – Very unsure of this, could be cool, may just be disappointing fluff.

Gaist Crusher – It’s a targeted at kids merchandise tie-in/spin-off. But some of the preview stuff looks cool so I might give it a go.

Nagi no Asukara – The basic premise sounds interesting but the character design looks a bit generic and I’ve the feeling its going to be overly melodramatic and annoying.

Kyousougiga – Interesting premise, I was inetered in the old ONA but for some reason I just cant work up enough excitment about it.

IS 2 – Tried the first season on the tail end of an anime marathon and wasnt impressed. I do plan to give it another go and if I like it then this will get a watch.

Kuroko no Basuke Second Season – Kuroko no Basuke is probably my favourite sports manga. But because I’m up to date with the manga it means I’m not super intersted in watching the animated version

Magi Second Season – Much like KnB I’m a big fan of the manga but dont really want to see both.
Ace of Diamond – Really great baseball manga, but like the two above when I read the manga I’m not super interested in seeing the anime.

Walkure Romance – I want to see what the world like but the story setup already pisses me off.
