(Upcoming) Games of 2014 – A storm’s a’comin

While I didnt get as many completed as I’d hope overall I think it’s fair to say that 2013 was a pretty great year for gaming. 2014 is shaping up to be even better. We’ll be seeing the new next generation consoles getting into their stride and a number of long anticipated titles, a lot of them long time Kickstarter darlings, are supposed to be coming out on PC. Hell, there’s even some mobile games coming out that look really good (dont look at me like that). So how do you navigate through this confusing maelstrom of choice? Simple, just lock onto the glorious light of my opinion and let it guide you through the darkness.

While it should go without saying, I’ll say it anyway. These are the games I’m looking forward to. While the list is long it isn’t just a list of everything coming out in 2013. I’m aware its missing a number of major releases (e.g. Titanfall, Halo 5, DriveClub, Elder Scrolls Online etc.). Thats because I’m either a) not interested in them, b) think they’ll be shit or c) all of the above. Or I suppose d) I dont have the sysem. I do not own an Xbox One and have zero interest in changing that. I also dont own a Wii U, though this year might see it reach a point where I’ll pick it up for access to its exclusives (I’d like to try The Wonderful 101 and both X and Bayonetta 2 look like they will be great).

Anticipated Games

These are the games that I’m actively looking forward to. I want to play them and I want to play them now. They are the games that have the best chance of retaining my attention before something shiny draws it away.

Bravely Default

(07/02/14)(3DS)

bravely_default_r-1bd24_thumb1

What they say: Dark times have befallen the land of Luxendarc, and its fate is in the hands of Tiz Arrior and his three comrades. Mold them into heroes as you take a fantastic journey in Square Enix’s highly acclaimed RPG for the Nintendo 3DS system.

Why I want it: Consumer response to this has been extremely positive. It’s supposed to be an excellent spritiual successor to the classic 16/32-bit JRPG’s of yesteryear. Which I enjoyed, but to be honest I had next to no interest in this until I tried the demo. Six hours of bizarrely enjoyable JRPG action later and this game has shot up from “Huh looks interesting” to “I needs my precious”. It looks great, the music is great, the battles and sub-systems are enjoyable. Its got a world map. Did I mention it looks great?

Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc

(14/02/14)(PSV)

264262-2013-10-18-144604DanganRonpa-Trigger-Happy-Havoc-Localized-Release-Trailer-Revealed-6

What they say: “High-Speed Logic Action” – In “Danganronpa” you’ll dive into a series of class trials and expose the lies and contradictions of your classmates in order to find out who’s behind each grisly murder. In each trial, you’ll have to use the evidence and testimony collected during your investigation to literally shoot down your opponent’s assertions. By combining logic and motion, “Danganronpa” offers an exciting and unprecedented gaming experience.

2.5D Graphics in Motion – By placing 2D illustrated characters and objects in a 3D space, the game creates a unique multidimensional setting. WIthin this environment, the camera work and motion animation helps to fully realize a remarkable 2.5D approach and provides a more stylish, engrossing world to explore.

A Tense World of Life and Death Choices – The stage is set at Hope’s Peak Academy, a private high school where the nation’s most “ultimate” students come to fulfill their potential.

Hope’s Peak lives up to its name as the hope of the nation, and it’s said that once you graduate, you’re set for life. However…the life waiting for the newest group of students is one of despair, where death and torment become commonplace. These ultimate students will face the ultimate test, and their unique abilities will be pushed to the breaking point…and beyond.

A Life of Despair Soon Unfolds…

Why I want it: Well I actually already have it. Ever since I came across previews of the artwork for the original game I’ve been interested in the franchise and last year a really high quality fan translation for the original PSP version was released. Which I played and thoroughly enjoyed. But never got around to completing. So I intened to pick up this officially localised copy for a number of reasons a) to support games like this being translated b) to play on dat Vita OLED and c) for the (fairly minimal) additional content and options the Vita version has. Oh and d) because its a great game.

Final Fantasy X HD Remaster / Final Fantasy X-2 HD Remaster

(18/03/14)(PS3)

FinalFantasy_X_X-2_HD_Remaster_0002final-fantasy-x-2-hd-remaster-paine

What they say: The world lies on the brink of destruction. Only a select few may be able to save it.

In ages past, the world of Spira experienced a golden age of perfection, brought about by an advanced civilization through the use of wondrous machinery called machina..

However, around one thousand years before the present day, a colossal menace known only as “Sin” appeared and sundered all before it. Though a line of summoners have since brought Sin low many times, it inevitably returns in an unending cycle of destruction. In the face of this ever-pervasive threat, the people of Spira flocked to the teachings of Yevon, which tell that Sin is a punishment to those who relied overly on machina.

Tidus is a young Blitzball star that mysteriously finds himself in Spira after his home city of Zanarkand is destroyed by Sin one thousand years in the past. Believing Sin to be the key to returning home, Tidus joins a young summoner named Yuna on her pilgrimage to destroy Sin and bring about the Calm.

Why I want it: Final Fantasy VII is my favourite Final Fantasy game, though I will admit it’s probably not he best. My second favourite (of the mainline games) is easily FFX. I completed the original more than once (though I never defeated all of the post-game hunts and Dark Aeons) and I’m looking forward to doing so again. I never really got into FFX-2 as the copy I had was scratched and would randomly crash. So I’m also looking forward to giving that a go. I imagine the majority of people picking this up will be doing so at least partly due to nostalgia but if you’re a fan of JRPG’s I’d recommend picking these up because they do a lot of things right and have a good story and some great characters. Hell I might even double-dip and pick up the Vita version as it has cross-save functionality.

Diablo III: Reaper of Souls

(25/03/14)(PS4)

d3-reaper-of-souls-announcedPCG258.feat_diablo.diablo3_b3

What they say: No One Can Stop Death. The Prime Evil rages within the Black Soulstone, its essence screaming for vengeance and release. Before the artifact can be sealed away forever, Malthael–Angel of Death–manifests in the mortal realms with a deadly new purpose: to steal the Black Soulstone and bend its infernal power to his will.
So begins the end of all things…

Why I want it: I was really looking forward to Diablo III. I don’t think it was terrible, but it was disappointing. It also lacked the longevity and replayability of its predecessors. I put in my sixty hours and moved on. However I still wanted a game of that type. I tried to scratch the itch with Torchlight 2, but ended up abandoning it half way through. I got a few months out of Path of Exile, but it has its own issues. I kickstarted a few similar games that have yet to come out. I even ended up picking up the console (PS3) version of Diablo III. Which was great, the changes to the game from control scheme, to lack of an auction house to local co-op make me vastly prefer it over the PC version. This expansion seems to be taking care of my current issues with the game so I’m only too happy to get back to battling the Prime Evils. I’ll likely get the PS4 version (hopefully I can get a cheap upgrade from the PS3 one) as I vastly prefer the controller for playing the game, it makes it feel so much more involved than the classic click-click-click (Blizzards bizarre decision not to offer both control schemes for the PC version is baffling).

Conception II: Children of the Seven Stars

(15/04/14)(PSV)

cutyucon2

What they say: Coming to Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation Vita is Conception II: Children of the Seven Stars, a unique dungeon-exploring RPG with school-life elements. In the world called Aterra where the Star God is worshipped, monsters have begun to spawn from the mysterious labyrinth. However, the Star God has imbued certain young adults – Disciples – with the power to fight monsters, as well as create Star Children to aid in the battle. Only Disciples and Star Children can defeat the monsters, and you, as God’s Gift, have an additional weighty task: to bond with seven other Disciples and bear many Star Children to help your world survive!

Why I want it: Not going to lie, the first game drew me in with its fairly outre concept and then enticed me with its solid looking dungeon crawling gameplay. However I was fairly sure it was never getting localised and moved on. Similarly when I saw a sequel announced and released in Japan I figured there was 0% chance of localisation. Clearly I figured wrong (though, and this is really baffling, the game only has an english dub whereas I would have greatly preferred the original audio). I’m still mainly attracted by the combination of the games amusing premise, light dating sim elements and solid looking dungeon crawling.

Demon Gaze

(22/04/14)(PSV)

adeqe1351512323_Demon-Gaze-01

What they say:Oz awakens to find himself in Misred – a cursed land at the world’s western frontier-with a dark shroud covering certain memories of his past. The land before him contains many labyrinths that hold both treasure and danger in equal volumes. Without knowing where else to go or what else to do, Oz decides to take up arms in order to hunt down artifacts and eke out a living in this world that feels so new to him. One day, he will have to face his past, but until then, he has no choice but to trust those around him, and in his newfound abilities as a “Demon Gazer”

Dungeon RPG Progress System: Conquer locations within dungeons to access better items and to draw out the boss!
HD Character and Monster Illustrations: Experience highly detailed and illustrated art like you’ve never seen before on the PS Vita’s OLED screen!
Customizable Party Creation: Choose from more than 90 different character portraits, 8 different races, and 8 different classes and create your ideal adventuring party to delve fearlessly into various beautiful 3D dungeons!
Touchscreen Quick travel: Employ the use of the PS Vita’s touch screen to quickly navigate your character through previously explored areas within dungeons!
Bilingual In-Game Voices: Experience authentic gameplay with original Japanese language/voices or new English language/voices.

Why I want it: Wizardry style dungeon crawlers were some of the computer rpg’s I ever played. From the glory days of 80’s home computer, to 90’s consoles and PC’s I played and enjoyed a fair number of them. But then both my interest and the genre itself more or less disappeared. Towards the end of last year I got back into them in a big way. Mostly via their localised Japanese descendants on handheld’s like the DS and PSP. I got so into them that I in-fact started designing my own (which I’m sure will be as successful as my other projects). In short I have that dungeon crawling horn and this looks like (and based on fan feedbacks is) an excellent entry in the genre. I’ve played some of the developers fan translated earlier games and they were great (if rather weird) so I have high hopes for this. I also absolutely love the look of the characters and monsters.

Dark Souls II

(??/??/14)(PC)

ur414l1365616388-dark-souls-ii-playstation-3-ps3-1

What they say: Developed by from software, Dark Souls II is the highly anticipated sequel to the punishing 2011 breakout hit Dark Souls (9.5/10 GameSpot, 9.0/10 IGN).

The unique old-school action rpg experience captivated imaginations of gamers worldwide with incredible challenge and intense emotional reward.

Dark Souls II brings the franchise’s renowned difficulty & gripping gameplay innovations to both single and multiplayer experiences.

Prepare to die… Again – Dare yourself to engage against intense gameplay in a vast world powered by an all new engine that leaps graphics, sound & fx forward like never before

A labyrinth of monsters & bosses – Immerse yourself into mind-bending environments filled with new twisted monsters and deadly bosses that could only come from the imagination of from software

Sensory assault – A wide range of threats will prey on human senses & phobias – auditory hallucinations, vertigo, acrophobia, etc.

Deeper and darker – More intricate customization options provide weapons and armor tailoring to player style

Evolved multiplayer – Updated multiplayer system enables improved online interaction to bring forward cooperative & competitive play

Go beyond death – Dark Souls II features fluid motion-capture animations, upgraded combat system, a vastly expanded suite of characters, deeper customization options, new weapons, armor abilities, and balanced player progression system

Why I want it: I put well over one hundred hours into the game that started the franchise, Demon Soul’s. I was super excited for its sequel but found it initially disappointing, though that was possibly due to my approach. Still I ended up enjoying it and sinking sixty or seventy hours into the PS3 version. I later double dipped and picked up the PC “Prepare to Die” edition. Which I really got into and sunk seventy or righty hours into. So its fair to say I’m a pretty big fan. I see no reason why this wont deliver enjoyment equal to or greater than the previous games. Based on my brief experience with the network test beta its already well on its way to being as good as the sequels.

Dead State

(??/??/14)(PC)

What they say: Dead State is a compelling, high-tension RPG set at the beginning of the zombie apocalypse – a deadly illness is rampaging through the world, turning those infected into the walking dead. As society is beginning to fall apart, the player must organize a scant handful of allies, working on fortifying a shelter, scouting for food and supplies, making uncertain alliances with others, and attempting to hold together a group as humanity teeters on the brink of extinction. And although the zombies lurk as an ever present threat, the biggest obstacle to the player may just be other humans with the same goal: survival at any cost.

-Strategic turn-based gameplay: combines single-player character control with streamlined ally AI management, allowing for innovative party control

-Lush graphics: expansive maps and detailed character models brought to life through the power of Torque 3D

-Unique perspective: Combination of classic isometric perspective and field of view based on character line-of-sight allows for a tense and exciting game experience

-Open-ended gameplay: Large explorable world and non-linear storyline allow players to explore the landscape of Dead State freely, and encounter new challenges each time they play

-Engaging story and characters: Story and characters written by veteran game developer Brian Mitsoda (Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines) – features realistic and compelling dialogue and expertly-woven story elements

-Compelling player choice: Players not judged by a linear morality scale, but asked to make difficult and challenging decisions to keep themselves and their fellow survivors alive

-Complex and reactive character AI: Allies react realistically in combat situations, human enemies employ variable tactics against other character, zombies follow frightening mobbing behavior

-Innovative mechanics: Noise mechanic affects how zombies track prey by sound, resource management within player shelter allows for streamlined upgrades and organization of ally tasks

Why I want it: This has been on my “Anticipated games” lists since back in 2011. Though the difference now is that I’ve helped kickstart the game and theres a tentative release date. But apart from that the reasons I want it havent changed – Are you bored of zombies? If your answer wasnt “Yes” then you are either a) wrong (because I am, and my opinions are the foundation your universe is built on), b) insane, c) really, really, really, really fond of zombies (to a point where you are banned from graveyards) or d) have been living in a cave. Zombies are played the fuck out, “Not-Zombies” are also played the fuck out. So why am I looking forward to a zombie game? Because this is the zombie game I always wanted. It sounds awesome. There’s an excellent extended preview here – http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2010/08/25/a-blood-red-state-dead-state-revealed/#

Grim Dawn

(??/??/14)(PC)

burrwitchprison012012-08-09_burrwitch01_lrg

What they say:Grim Dawn is an action role-playing game intended for digital distribution on the PC. It is being developed by veterans of Iron Lore entertainment, the makers of Titan Quest. Grim Dawn is being built with Crate’s own improved version of the Iron Lore engine and toolset; the same technology used to create Titan Quest. As a spiritual successor, Grim Dawn will attempt to better perfect the magical formula of exploration, character advancement, and loot collection pioneered by Diablo.

Players will be thrust into the dark, war-torn world of Cairn where a once proud empire has been brought to ruin and the human race driven to the edge of extinction. Cairn has become ground zero of an eternal war between two otherworldly powers, one seeking to use human bodies as a resource, the other intent upon destroying the human race before that can happen. This cataclysmic war has not only decimated human civilization but is warping the very fabric of reality and, in its wake, giving life to new horrors.

For humankind it is the dawn of a grim new age where iron has replaced gold as currency and the importance of salt as a weapon makes it far too valuable to waste on food. Small enclaves of human survivors exist scattered throughout the world, holed up in hidden refuges. These humans have quietly watched the warring invaders destroy one another and have become wise to the strengths and vulnerabilities of their otherworldly foes. A few survivors have begun to exhibit strange new abilities after surviving possession or exposure to the warp. These unnatural powers are feared by some but give many new hope of launching a resistance to fight the “outsiders” and reclaim what’s left of their world.

Why I want it: Well this has been here since last years list. In that time I’ve scratched my Diablo-like itch with Path of Exile (really enjoyable but a little sparse on content and lacks some modern quality of life improvements) and Diablo III PS3 (the definitive edition until the PS4 one comes out, so much better than the PC version). But I’m still interested in trying this out. Hopefully it should make it out this year.

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: All Star Battle

(??/??/14)(PS3)

jojos-bizarre-adventure-all-star-battle_2012_07-05-12_001_1_jpg_1400x0_q8501

What they say:Nothing in English. Well at least they said that its coming out in English. Though only in the glorious future police state of the EU.

Why I want it: This year I finally got into JoJo’s and while it does generally look odd as fuck (and in a lot of the earlier arcs/series simply awful) the story itself is this oddly appealing mashup of bizarre superpowers and pulp sensibilities. I have to say I’m a fan. Then there’s CyberConnect, who make the best anime/manga games out there. What do I mean by that? I mean that the Cyberconnect licensed fighting games actually playout and let you feel like youre replicating the kind of action you see in their source material. I dont think this game will get localised but I’ll be buying a copy regardless.

Pillars of Eternity

(??/??/14)(PC)

pe-screenshot-001-1920x1080pe-screenshot-002-1920x1080

What they say: What is Eternity? Eternity aims to recapture the magic, imagination, depth, and nostalgia of classic RPG’s that we enjoyed making – and playing. At Obsidian, we have the people responsible for many of those classic games and we want to bring those games back… and that’s why we’re here – we need your help to make it a reality!

Eternity will take the central hero, memorable companions and the epic exploration of Baldur’s Gate, add in the fun, intense combat and dungeon diving of Icewind Dale, and tie it all together with the emotional writing and mature thematic exploration of Planescape: Torment.

Why I want it: It doesn’t matter why I want it. I already own having kickstarted it. But I’ll humour you humble reader. I want this because it’s a modern re-imagining of classic CRPG’s made by the people who made them back them. Games like Baldur’s Gate, Planescape: Torment, etc. are defining moments in my gaming life. If this simply replicated those experiences with modern graphics and quality of life improvements it would be great. But as it looks like its improving on them I cant wait.

The Evil Within

(??/??/14)(PC)

1375383254-the-evil-within-1The-Evil-Within-screenshot-5

What they say: Shinji Mikami, the father of survival horror, is back to direct The Evil Within™ – a game embodying the meaning of pure survival horror. Highly-crafted environments, horrifying anxiety, and an intricate story weave together to create an immersive world that will bring players to the height of tension. The Evil Within is in development for the Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, and PC and is slated for release in 2014.

Why I want it: Two words: Shinj Mikami

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

(??/??/14)(PC)

ibzOQu3NaEVUfMwtch6

What they say:A mature, non-linear story drawn from player decisions, full of unexpected events and believable, memorable characters, with their own motivations and ambitions.

Multi-Region Open World – Sail through the wind-swept and rugged islands off the coast of Northern Kingdoms.
Dynamic and Tactical Combat – Unique, intuitive combat system blending a wide range of tactical elements with the most spectacular and dynamic combat sequences ever seen in a computer role-playing game.
Living Ecosystems – Communities behave with realism, the flora and fauna form
a living ecosystem, and they all react to in-game events…
Stunning Visuals – The best-looking RPG to date, competing with games in other genres in which the standard of visuals has traditionally been superior.

http://youtu.be/rT3Vr4bP9Jc
Why I want it: The Witcher 2 is easily the best WRPG I’ve played in the last decade or so. Gameplay, graphics, story and characters were all excellent. As was the staggering amount of content. This seems to be almost as big an improvement over The Witcher 2 that it was over the first. Which can only mean that it may well be the greatest WRPG ever. I can’t fucking waiting to get back to controlling Geralt of Rivia

Games I’ll probably play

If I was feeling like a dick (and when am I not?) I would suggest that these are the more popular and creatively bankrupt games and that they’ll be bought in bulk BY YOU SHEEP!. But that’s going a bit far. This section does feature a dis-proportinate number of “Triple A” titles though. I guess I’m drifting away from a place where mainstream games appeal to me. Games listed here are ones I will no doubt play but which are marred by one thing or another (quite often my own bizarre opinion).

The Banner Saga

(14/01/14)(PC)

ss-019ss-020

What they say: The Banner Saga is an epic role-playing game inspired by Viking legend. Hand-painted landscapes portray a world eerily suspended in perpetual twilight. Cities and towns begin to crumble into chaos. Heroes abandon their hearths and homes to traverse the snowy countryside, gaining allies along the way to help battle a strange, new threat.

Decisions have consequences; wise choices must be made when conversing with possible allies during intricately crafted dialogues. Turn-based strategy brings tactical challenge in hand-animated battle sequences. With visuals evocative of the golden age of animation, The Banner Saga brings skillfully crafted art, story and strategy to gamers waiting to re-experience classic adventures and tactics.

Why I want it: I’m a fan of well done stories about Vikings and Norse mythology. I’m a fan of strategy rpg’s. So I should be a very big fan of the Banner Saga which appears to combine both into a lovely looking whole. It also helps that the games artstyle and artwork is really nice looking. Now the more astute reader may have realised that this game is already out, so if I’m potentially such a big fan how come I dont already own it? Well the reasons for that are two fold. The first is that while I was vaguely aware it existed it was only recently that I actually took the time to look at it. The second, and much less glamorous, reason is that I’m a cheap bastard. In this instance I dont want to pay €25 for a game that takes about ten hours to complete. If I’d nothing else to play, either in general or in this genre, then I wouldnt have an issue with the price. But I have both a sizeable backlog of games to play and in turn a sizeable portion of that is made up of SRPG’s. As soon as it goes on sale a bit or I clear out some of my backlog I shall be snapping it up.

Might & Magic X: Legacy

(23/01/14)(PC)

Might-and-Magic-X-Legacy-Patch_5d546812ec344

What they say:In the wake of the events of Might & Magic® Heroes® VI, the city of Karthal, once a proud colony of the Holy Empire located in the Agyn Peninsula, is on the verge of secession. The player will control the destinies of four adventurers, as they become entangled in the political machinations and intrigues unfolding in and around Karthal. Various powers, both old and new, are vying for control of the city.

As they grow in power and fame, the adventurers’ actions will determine the fate of the Agyn Peninsula, and if they are heroic and diligent, prevent the ghosts of the past from casting a dark shadow upon the region’s future.
Forge your own tactics: Through the Might & Magic traditional and acclaimed first-person turn-based gameplay system, lead your team of four Heroes in their journey!

Choose your gender among four different races: Humans, Orcs, Elves, Dwarves, the choice is yours! Each race also boasts three unique classes, each one having their own skills and abilities. Defeat creatures and unique bosses, fulfill challenging quests, level up your group, and earn new powerful artifacts.
Discover a new part of Ashan: The world of Ashan is full of mysteries hidden in remote places; it is so gigantic that numerous parts of it remain unexplored even by the bravest of Heroes. Take a look around the Agyn Peninsula, a totally new environment in the Might & Magic universe. Get familiar with its epic wilderness and meet the locals who are full of surprises…
Explore twisted dungeons: What would be a classic RPG without numerous Dungeons to explore? In Might & Magic X® Legacy, you will need to crawl and fight your way through twisted dungeons, immense cities, and mind-boggling labyrinths.

Why I want it:Do I want it? I dont know. The games already out for a few days now and every day I spend a few minutes struggling with the decision to buy it or not. In my (far off) youth I really, really (ended up renting one of the games out so often it became cheaper to buy it) enjoyed some of the earlier entries in the Might & Magic franchise (as well as similar Wizardry style games). It’s also a genre that I got back into recently. And all the reports are that its really good (with some excusable flaws due to its tiny budget). I mean there’s no logical reason why I havent bought it. Hell theres even some good discounts so it wont even cost me twenty quid. But for some reason I just cant seem to pull the trigger. Which is why it languishes here in the “B” tier.

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII

(11/02/14)(PS3)

Gameplay-lightning-returns-final-fantasy-xiii-34395489-1440-900Lightning-Returns-Final-Fantasy-XIII1

What they say:As Lightning, it is your mission to save as many souls as possible so that they may be brought to the new world. Along the journey, you will encounter familiar faces and engage new foes in all new lands. You must ultimately choose which souls to save and which to abandon…and fully understand Lightning’s true destiny.

It all ends here.

Your Own Lightning: Upgrade Lightning’s look, abilities and actions through hundreds of game-changing weapons and outfit combinations.

A Constantly Moving World: Nova Chrysalia moves to the beat of a 24 hour clock resulting in a different journey for every player

All New Battle System: Master a completely overhauled battle system to control Lightning like never before by being able to block, dodge, and counter with precision

Why I want it: As I mentioned elsewhere my feelings towards the XIII strain of Final Fantasy games is mixed. XIII was bad, not as terrible as people make out, but very, very average. XIII-2 was actually fairly decent, but above average at best (though it has the second best Final Fantasy villain’s of all time and frankly just an all around great antagonist). I’m not expecting this final entry to wow me and I’m also not super interested in the culmination of the meta-narrative as it involves characters the majority of whom I actively dislike. But I need to finish it, then I can close the lid on XIII, then I’ll be done. Needless to say I shall not be picking this up on release or for full price. Though in fairness to it it does look fairly different and some of the changes look cool. Particularly all the costume ones because I am openly addicted to playing dress up in rpg’s.

Toukiden

(14/02/14)(PSV)

touk4touk2

What they say: Following a ground breaking success in Japan where its current sales stand well over the 400,000 mark, an impressive feat for an original IP, Toukiden: the Age of Demons is now being localised for release in Europe for the PlayStation Vita handheld system.

In Toukiden, players can customise characters, weapons and armour and form a group of hunters to take down the destructive Oni-demons of varying strength and size who have invaded the world through cracks in space and time. This visually stunning game boasts an extensive character creation mode, six non-player characters beautifully designed by Atelier Ayesha artist Hidari, and six different weapon types, each of which can be forged and upgraded to the player’s preferences.

Toukiden: The Age of Demons, is set against a backdrop inspired by various historical periods of Japan, while it also features 200 characters based on both fictional and historical Japanese figures, whose souls help players strengthen their team and defeat their enemies.

Why I want it: Conceptually I love the Monster Hunter series. In execution, eh, not so much. So I keep playing MH-alikes that switch up the formula a bit, whether thats with the aesthetics, the mechanics, whatever. Some of them I really enjoy (Soul Sacrifice) and some are just ok. I really like the look of Toukiden and the demo is fun. The response from importers is also strong. Unfortunately these games are so much better multiplayer that not knowing anyone a) who owns a Vita and b) lives close enough to play this, means that I may not pick it up.

Atelier Escha & Logy: Alchemists of the Dusk Sky

(11/03/14)(PS3)

Atelier-Escha-and-Logy-Alchemist-of-Dusk-Sky_2013_04-29-13_038Atelier-Escha-Logy-Alchemist-of-Dusk-Sky-32

What they say: The latest instalment in the long-loved Atelier series, Atelier Escha & Logy: Alchemists of the Dusk Sky, is a direct sequel to Atelier Ayesha: The Alchemist of Dusk and will be released in Europe in early 2014 for the PlayStation 3 computer entertainment system.

For the first time in PlayStation 3, Atelier series players can choose if they will follow the story of Escha or Logy, a novelty that offers a unique story perspective and gameplay experience. Escha’s story is a delightful tale of the everyday adventures of an alchemist that Atelier series’ fans love, whereas Logy’s story follows a darker approach filled with traditional RPG elements and focused on world exploration.

Why I want it: My relationship with the Atelier franchise is rather odd. I’ve played an enjoyed a large number of them, ranging all the way back to the glory days of the PS2. But I’ve only ever completed one (even got all the endings including the glorious Pie ending). It also took me two attempts to complete it. Not really sure why, the game are fun and I generally love the art direction and the cel shaded look. This is a sequel to last years first entry in the new “Dusk” series. I’d like to pick it up but probably wont until I can get its prequel on the cheap (come on PS+)

Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes

(18/03/14)(PS4)

mgurlMetal-Gear-Solid-V-Ground-Zeroes-5

What they say: World-renowned Kojima Productions showcases the latest masterpiece in the Metal Gear Solid franchise with Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes. Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes (on sale Spring 2014) is the first segment of the ‘Metal Gear Solid V Experience’ and prologue to the larger second segment, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain launching thereafter. MGSV: GZ gives core fans the opportunity to get a taste of the world-class production’s unparalleled visual presentation and gameplay before the release of the main game. It also provides an opportunity for gamers who have never played a Kojima Productions game, and veterans alike, to gain familiarity with the radical new game design and unparalleled style of presentation. The critically acclaimed Metal Gear Solid franchise has entertained fans for decades and revolutionized the gaming industry. Kojima Productions once again raises the bar with the FOX Engine offering incredible graphic fidelity and the introduction of open world game design in the Metal Gear Solid universe. This is the experience that core gamers have been waiting for.

Why I want it: Because its Metal Gear Solid. While my ardour for the franchise has cooled I’ve still enjoyed every one of them I played. Even the largely terrible MGS2. The move to an open world design is one I’m ambivalent about. People clamour for open worlds without putting much thought into whether it suits the game or not, as if its a universally welcome addition. On the other hand having more freedom in how to approach mission objectives is no bad thing and could add an interesting new dimension to the gameplay. Also the new graphics engine looks very, very nice and it’ll give me an excuse to unpack my PS4.

InFamous: Second Son

(21/03/14)(PS4)

Infamous2496240-infamous-second-son_2013_06-10-13_009

What they say: inFAMOUS Second Son, a PlayStation 4 exclusive, brings you an action adventure game where surrounded by a society that fears them, superhumans are ruthlessly hunted down and caged by the Department of Unified Protection. Step into a locked-down Seattle as Delsin Rowe, who has recently discovered his superhuman power and is now capable of fighting back against the oppressive DUP. Enjoy your power as you choose how you will push your awesome abilities to the limit and witness the consequences of your actions as they affect the city and people around you.

A New Origin Story: Step into an open world adventure that offers a realistic take on being superhuman
Choice and Consequence: Witness how the city, the people you encounter, and even the story itself is all affected by the actions you take
Control Multiple Powers: Draw powers out from other superhumans, creating your own set of distinct powers to use as you see fit
Freely Explore the City of Seattle featuring highly detailed environments, realistic weather, reflections, shadows and lighting

Why I want it: I am not a fan of the inFamous franchise. I think its deeply flawed on a lot of levels. I was looking forward to the first one but found it immensely tedious. The second one was a big improvement but still felt mediocre overall. This one however looks like it mixes up the formula enough to be genuinely good. It doesnt hurt that it looks lovely and its rather slim pickings on the PS4 front at the moment.

Deception IV: Blood Ties

(25/03/14)(PSV)

ZBpfuKADeception-IV_Fami-shot_10-23_009

What they say: From the producer of Fatal Frame comes the re-imagining of the classic Tecmo title “Devil’s Deception”, first released in 1996 on the PlayStation. The Deception series uniquely focuses in giving players a taste of what its like to play on the side of evil by using a wide variety of imaginative traps to exact revenge on their adversaries.

Deception IV: Blood Ties is being developed for the PlayStation 3 computer entertainment system and the PlayStation Vita handheld system and is, much like its predecessors, a strategy focused action series where players control a main character that defeats enemies by luring them into imaginative traps.

Why I want it: I don’t know why but the prospect of a game where you defeat your opponents by luring them into traps just really appeals. It feels sort of like a meaner and more personalised version of Dungeon Keeper.

The Witch and the Hundred Knight

(25/03/14)(PS3)

The-Witch-and-the-Hundred-KnightThe-Witch-and-the-Hundred-Knig-image-408

What they say: From the makers of the acclaimed Disgaea series comes an action RPG in which being bad can be a good thing! Full of the same dark humor and mischief beloved by hardcore gamers, The Witch and the Hundred Knights tells of two witches locked in a vicious, hundred-year feud. As the Swamp Witch (a self-proclaimed genius), players will command 100 powerful Knights in hopes of finally defeating her long time foe, the Forest Knight. It’s time to finally settle the feud, but whether the Knights are good or evil is up to you

Why I want it: In many ways I’m buying this simply because I like NIS’ other games and want to support them localising them. I love the artwork, characters and stories from the majority of their games and all of that looks interesting here too. I particularly like the design of the titular witch. So why is this down in “B tier” then? Well to be honest its because I like the look of everything about this game other than the gameplay. Thats not to say I dont like the look of the gameplay, Im not that much of a fanboy. It looks like a fairly decent Diablo-esque game. Which I think I’ll enjoy. Its just that the gameplay doesnt excite me.

Persona Q

(05/06/14)(3DS)

Persona-Q-1Persona-Q-6

What they say: Not a lot in english. Persona Q is a crossover video game, containing characters from both Persona 3 and Persona 4. However, different from the source games, Persona Q’s gameplay will focus further on being a dungeon crawler, comparable to the Etrian Odyssey series of games also produced by Atlus on Nintendo handhelds. As with prior Persona games, the player’s choices will alter the flow of the game.

Why I want it: Persona + Chibi + Wizardry style dungeon crawler = want. I love the setting, I love the look of the characters and I love the Etrian Odyssey game formula (which the former are being slotted into). I’d prefer it on the Vita rather than the 3DS, as I find the former more comfortable for longer play sessions and I imagine I’ll be sinking a lot of time into this game.

Dying Light

(25/08/14)(PC)

Dying Light 2Dying-Light-21Ago2013-2

What they say: Dying Light is a first-person, action survival horror game set in a vast and dangerous open world. During the day, players traverse an expansive urban environment overrun by a vicious outbreak, scavenging the world for supplies and crafting weapons to defend against the growing infected population. At night, the hunter becomes the hunted, as the infected become aggressive and more dangerous. Most frightening are the predators which only appear after sundown. Players must use everything in their power to survive until the morning’s first light.

Survive the Night – During the day, players roam free and scavenge for supplies and weapons. But at night, the world undergoes a deadly transformation: the hunter becomes the hunted as the infected grow more aggressive and numerous, and something far more sinister awakens to stalk its prey.
Free Running Movement – Whether tracking prey or escaping predators, Dying Light lets players swiftly navigate the world by seamlessly leaping between buildings, grappling up walls and pouncing on unsuspecting enemies.
Open World Environments – Dying Light is set in a vast open world, delivering expansive and varied environments, a wide variety of enemy classes and a hopeless tale of survival where resources are scarce and the infected are not the only threat.
Brutal Melee and Ranged Combat – get up-close using a variety of light and heavy weapons including knives, bats, axes, sledgehammers and more exotic weaponry or utilize guns and other firepower to take down enemies from a distance.
Choose Your Play Style – Dying Light features four playable characters that can be fully customized and upgraded to match any play style.
Craft Your Weapon – Why use a wrench when you can use a wrench wrapped in electrified barbed wire? Dying Light’s sizeable crafting system enables players to create a slew of new, more potent weapons and equipment, as well as specialized ammunition.
Breathtaking Visuals and Gameplay – Dying Light is the first game powered by Chrome Engine 6, a cutting edge incarnation of Techland’s proprietary technology, designed from the ground up for the new console generation, DirectX 11 and other advanced solutions.

Why I want it: I dont really know to be honest. I’m bored in general with zombies. On the other hand if people do something novel with them, or something with a lot of polish, then I’m happy enough to give it a go. This game looks (visually) really nice and its making a lot of the same kind of promises other zombie games have made and failed to deliver on. But I’m happy enough to give it a chance to prove me wrong.

Destiny

(09/09/14)(PS4)

1390035930-18Screenshot_venus07

What they say: Destiny is an action game from the creators of Halo, set in a mysterious future. Create a unique and powerful character, customize the way you look and fight, and explore what remains of our solar system.
Destiny features a compelling storyline, competitive multiplayer, cooperative gameplay choices, wide open public combat destinations, and third-person community spaces where you can repair and rearm before going out on your next adventure.

Why I want it: While I may have had issues with the series as it went on Halo offered pretty strong singleplayer experiences as well as really enjoyable multiplayer (no matter how much I sucked at it). Destiny looks like its going to expand on both of these areas and I much prefer its more traditional sci-fi aesthetic to the overtly military nature of a lot of Halo’s art design. The co-operative elements also sound cool (and Warframe has really got me into co-op shooters). So if they can deliver on the promises theyre making this could be a really great game.

Lords of the Fallen

(??/??/14)(PC)

lodLords-of-The-Fallen-Screenshot-02

What they say: Not a huge amount really. The narrative follows lone hero Harkyn, who, because of his dark past, “will never smile again, nor have friends or family.” In this world, wrongdoers have marks of their misdeeds tattooed on their body as a reminder of their shame, and only Harken; the most tattooed wrongdoer in the land has the power to stop this threat. Aside from coping with all his issues, Harkyn’s mission is to investigate the awakening of an ancient fallen god who has been imprisoned deep below the Earth; with only his arm sticking out of a vast mountain range, stuck there after one final attempt at escape. Without warning, his minions have sprung forth and are wreaking havoc on the land.

Battles will prove tricky, with nine weapon pools to choose from spread across three classes. Melee is the heart of combat, and boasts a range of combos that must be mastered to fell demonic enemies with ease. Some attacks offer brief windows of invulnerability that must be used to increase your survival, as well as blocking and dodge rolls. Just like From Software’s series, attack patterns must be memorised and brutal foes must be slain against all seemingly impossible odds.

Why I want it: It sounds interesting and while the visual design does look a little bit like its trying too hard to be edgy and dark the part of me that likes such things is appeased. What initially got me interested is that its the new project from The Witcher 2 producer Tomasz Gop. The Witcher 2 is one of my favourite RPG’s of all time so I’m definitely excited by the prospect of another game helmed by this guy. He’s also been saying all the right stuff in interviews, such as “This is a game about you crossing the gap. The difference and distance between being a random noob at the beginning, and skilled pro player at the end. This crafting of your skill is what this is about, and I thought Dark Souls was exactly about the same thing.” Also, ever since they released concept art ages ago showing a mountain range formed from a dead god’s hand I’ve been interested in this.

Tales of Xillia 2

(??/Q2/14)(PS3)

Tales-of-Xillia-2-41344606416_Tales_of_Xillia_2-11

What they say: TALES OF XILLIA 2 focuses on the events a year after the climactic end of TALES OF XILLIA. Players assume the role of Ludger Kresnik, a young man with a zest of cooking who lives with his older brother and his cat, named Rollo. On his way to his first day at work for a local cafeteria he runs into a young girl named Elle Marta and the two soon become involved in an accident that will change both of their lives forever.

TALES OF XILLIA 2 focuses its story theme around the concept of “choice”, which is also expressed heavily in the game’s overall gameplay mechanics. Throughout Ludger’s journey the player will be able to decide how he reacts to various characters and situations. These choices can cause the story to branch out into different paths depending on the player’s decisions.

Why I want it: I’m currently about ten hours into the first Tales of Xillia and I’m really enjoying it so far. I’m more than happy to assume that the sequel, which is widely regarded as superior in terms of gameplay and story, will be more than worth my time. The fact that its also supposed to have a darker and more mature storyline (not that Xillia’s is all sunshine and rainbows) is welcome news. As is the fact that the DLC purchased for the first game will work with its sequel.

The Order: 1886

(??/Q3/14)(PS4)

TheORDERThe-Order-1886

What they say: This is not the history you know. Experience a unique vision of Victorian London where Man uses advanced technology to battle a powerful and ancient foe. As a member of an elite order of knights, join a centuries-old war that will determine the course of history forever.

Why I want it: Look and feel mostly. Turn of last century mix of alt history and occultism is right up my alley. Also zeppelins. And what looks like werewolves. And you know when you see a big sign saying Whitechapel that Jack the Ripper is making an appearance somewhere or other. Still not entirely sure what the actual gameplay will be like, whether it’ll be more The Last of Us style or something more akin to Gears of War. I’m definitely hoping for the former both in terms of gameplay and quality.

Trails in the Sky: Second Chapter

(??/??/14)(PC)

Trails-2Trails-1

What they say: Nothing much in english. So heres a description of First Chapter to keep you going: The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky is the first of a new trilogy in the established The Legend of Heroes RPG series. A highly detailed 3D world, beautiful original soundtrack, and unique strategic battle system showcase production values a generation beyond the previous iteration. An epic story about preserving the peace against all odds spanning over 50 hours of gameplay, with numerous optional side quests, makes this the biggest adventure ever available on a handheld system.

In the peaceful town of Rolent of the Liberl Kingdom, a young girl named Estelle and her friend Joshua, who had been taken in by her family years earlier, prepare to take their first steps to join the legendary guild of the Bracers. Bracers are considered the peacekeepers and protectors of order that owe allegiance to no country or government. In Liberl their guild has flourished since a brief war some ten years prior after an invasion from the Erebonian Empire to the north, and their efforts have made peace a lasting prospect.

In the course of their journey to become full-fledged Bracers, Estelle and Joshua begin to see the peace threatened by a dark side of the ruling government that plots to overthrow the Liberl queen, Alicia. Together they travel the world on their quest to become Bracers and slowly unravel the truth behind the mastermind who seeks to bring war back to their borders.

Why I want it: TiTS First Chapter is one of the best JRPG’s that no-ones ever played. Its slow as fuck to get started but once it does its really excellent. Especially the characters and the story. Which can often be serviceable at best even in decent JRPG’s. Add to that the fact that I’ve been waiting ssssssssssooooooo long for the Second chapter to come out and theres really no way I cant buy this game. It seems that the First Chapter is getting a PC release this year as well so I’ll probably double dip on it just for higher res graphics.

Transistor

(??/??/14)(PC)

Transistor_Wallpaper_1920x1080Transistor_19-mar-2013_02_small

What they say: Fuck all so far. “Transistor is a sci-fi themed action RPG that invites players to wield an extraordinary weapon of unknown origin as they fight through a stunning futuristic city.”

Why I want it: Bastion, while flawed, was overall pretty damn good. Particularly the way it looked. So I’m a fan of the studio’s work. Transistor is an ARPG. A genre I’ve a passing fondness for. So theres that. The heroine has a square sword. Who doesnt love square swords? Just take my money. It also helps that even in the preview material the art direction looks amazing and the sound, well, sounds great. Enemy design and levels look interesting, as does the gameplay.

Watchdogs

(??/??/14)(PC)

Watch-Dogs-E3-2012-1Watch-Dogs-2

What they say: Watch Dogs (stylised as WATCH_DOGS) is an upcoming open world action-adventure video game, developed by Ubisoft Montreal, best known for their work on the Far Cry and Assassin’s Creed franchises, for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Wii U, and the Xbox 360. Watch Dogs centers on the player’s ability to hack into various electronic systems, either to obtain and control information or to destroy those devices completely at specific times.

The main gameplay mechanic of Watch Dogs is the use of hacking and surveillance. The game’s antihero Aiden Pearce can use any device tied to the city’s central operating system (ctOS) as a weapon against it. During the gameplay demonstration, Aiden is seen jamming cellphones to serve as a distraction as he enters a vanity art exhibit, tapping a phone call to retrieve information about his target, manipulating traffic lights to cause a large pileup designed to trap the target and his bodyguards, and escaping the police by driving a car across a river bridge, that he had started to raise in a similar fashion. The player can also access information from the ctOS on the NPCs they encounter, including information on demographics, health, and their probability of violence. Combat utilizes a combination of stealth components and parkour, along with the mechanics of a cover-based third-person shooter. The E3 demo also demonstrated co-op play, as focus shifted to a second character above Pearce, on higher buildings, referred to as ”Bixxel_44″ (controlled by another player) following Aiden’s successful killing of his target, who was given orders to protect Aiden by intercepting the police trying to catch him, and then fled the place using fluid parkour-like moves.

Why I want it:Come one. Who didnt want to play this after seeing the trailer? I imagine it wont deliver on its promise but I’m willing to believe.

Game’s I’m not likely to play but may

(ooh snappy title)

These are games that I’ve very little interest in but will probably end up playing because a) everybody else will and I like to have something to base my ranting on or b) just because. Some games are also here because there simply isnt enough information available at the moment to decide how interested I am.

BlazBlue: Chronophantasma

(25/03/14)(PS3)

20120805_bbcp00120120805_bbcp003

What they say: A Whole New World – BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma outdoes itself as part of one of the best 2D fighting game series of all time! With new art and a seamless combination of 2D and 3D graphics, BlazBlue’s vibrant, harrowing world comes to life on the PlayStation 3 entertainment system!

New Characters – Chrono Phantasma will introduce five new characters and two new downloadable characters, bringing the roster list to 25!
New Moves – All characters from the series have been redesigned with new moves. Watch all the action as they unleash powerful attacks never before seen on the BlazBlue stage! Re-master your old characters and tear your friends apart!
Modes for Everyone – With an amazing tutorial, gripping story and a variety of other modes, BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma offers hours of gameplay for everyone!

Why I want it: I have had to come to terms with the fact that while in theory I love fighting games that without solid local competition I just cant bring myself to sink time into them. And as I lack solid local competition I need to stop buying them because it is a pretty big waste of money. And I’m sure some day that message will sink in and I’ll stop buying them. Until that day I’ll think things like “Oh that new character fights with his jacket draped on his shoulders, badass, I’m playing him!”.

Mind Zero

(09/09/14)(PS4)

yaLXc1F - Imgurii2gazi - Imgur

What they say: From Aksys Games and Acquire, the studios that brought Gladiator Begins comes Mind Zero, an exciting dungeon-crawler RPG for the PlayStation Vita! Kei, a high school student is given the power of “Mind,” the ability to control a persona with powerful abilities. However, “Mind” is much more than it seems. With the government and others tracking them down, what will Kei and his friends discover about themselves, but more importantly, about this mysterious power?

Free Roaming Map – Allows players to buy items, advance the story or enter dungeons to level up!

A Compelling Story – Mind Zero is not only action-packed game, but a complex, suspenseful story. Delve deep into the mythos and compelling characters as the story unfolds.

Why I want it: This game clearly draws a lot of “inspiration” from the more recent Persona games. Which I dont have a problem with to be honest. I enjoy the Persona games and if you’re going to make a clone at least they’ve picked an awesome source. I could also definitely go for a) more dungeon crawlers and b) more games for my Vita full stop. I like the character and monster design. I was interested in it when it was released in Japan and then sort of forgot about it until today’s localisation announcement. So why’s it languishing all the way down here? Well import fan reviews and Japanese reviews have not been kind, not kind at all. So my urge to pick it up has diminished dramatically.

Ultra Street Fighter IV

(15/06/14)(PC/PS3)

ultra-street-fighter-4Ultra-Street-Fighter-IV-4

What they say: The Street Fighter® IV series evolves to a whole new level with Ultra Street Fighter® IV for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC. Continuing the tradition of excellence the series is known for, five new characters and six new stages have been added for even more fighting mayhem, with rebalanced gameplay and original modes topping off this ultimate offering.

Available via retail, full download, or digital upgrade, users who purchase the retail or full download version of the game will also receive all previous costume DLC released for the series (a $40 value), making this the definitive version of Street Fighter IV to check out!

New Characters: Five new characters, including: Poison, Hugo, Elena, and Rolento, join the fight, complete with their own unique play styles, bringing the current roster count to a massive 44 characters.
New Stages: Six new battle environments: Pitstop 109, Mad Gear Hideout, Cosmic Elevator, Blast Furnace, Half Pipe, and Jurassic Era Research Facility, have been added for even more visual variety.
Rebalanced Gameplay: Direct fan feedback was gathered on all of Super Street Fighter IV AE’s original 39 characters and core system mechanics in order to achieve the most balanced Street Fighter ever.
New Modes and Features: Yet to be announced brand new modes and features further add to the suite of gameplay options.

Why I want it: Stockholm syndrome. Nostalgia. Reflex. In my own personal gaming history the importance of Street Fighter cannot be over-stated. So whether I get much play out of this or not I’m almost certainly going to buy it (though dont be mistaken I really do enjoy how SF4, and its various enhanced sequels, play)

Dragon Age: Inquisition

(??/Q3/14)(PC)

daidiuty

What they say: Explore a vast, fantasy world at the brink of catastrophe in Dragon Age™: Inquisition, a next-generation action RPG, where your choices shape and drive the experience. In this upcoming video game from BioWare, makers of Mass Effect 3 and Dragon Age: Origins, you’ll make your mark in an expansive, story-driven open world filled with complex characters, challenging combat and difficult decisions.
A cataclysmic event has plunged the land of Thedas into turmoil. Dragons now darken the sky, casting a shadow of terror over a once-peaceful kingdom. Mages have broken into an all-out war against the oppressive Templars. Nations rise against one another. It falls to you to restore order as you lead the Inquisition and hunt down the agents of chaos – your choices will forever change the Dragon Age.

Why I want it: I loved the first Dragon Age game (and its multitude of DLC). It was flawed but really, really enjoyable. Needless to say I was looking forward to seeing the story continue in the second one. Oh wait its a new character. Ok. Oh wait theyve totally changed how combat works. Ok. So I bought it. A decision I regret to this day. So the franchise is basically back at zero for me. Then there was the Mass Effect 3 debacle (and the Star Wars MMO). I used to love Bioware, now theres zero chance I’ll buy one of their games Day 1. I might pick this up if a) I can get it cheap further down the line and b) consumer feedback is positive. Unfortunately based on the gameplay and such we’ve seen this looks like even more of an ARPG than DA2, which isnt the direction I wanted to see the series go in.

Fortnite

(??/??/14)(PC)

Fortnite-face-off9951220120713_105634_5_big

What they say: In Fortnite, players will explore, forage, collaborate and build by day in their own dynamic and expanding world. At night, they’ll work together to defend their prized fortress from the forces of darkness.

Why I want it:The scavenging and construction mechanics look really interesting and are something that to-date not other game has got right. The tower defence element also appeals, even if I’m sick to death (no pun intended) of fucking zombies.

Persona 4: Dancing All Night

(??/??/14)(PSV)

persona_4_dancing_all_nightrgferagaerg

What they say: Fuck all other than that its coming

Why I want it: Of the rhythm games I have tried I’ve enjoyed some and disliked others (fuck you Patapon, I got no rhythm). I havent really tried any of the modern ones which this appears to be something of a clone off. But to be honest that doesnt matter, I am such a giant Persona franchise fanboy that I’ll likely pick this up for whatever slim garnish of Persona its served with.

Quantum Break

(??/??/14)(XB1)

Quantum_Screenshot_3Quantum_Screenshot_1

What they say: Developed exclusively for Xbox One, Quantum Break blurs the line between television and gameplay, integrating the two into one seamless, uniquely immersive experience. Quantum Break weaves the cinematic action of intense gameplay with the tension and drama of scripted television, creating a world where each has a direct impact on the other.

Why I want it: Now I know I said back at the beginning that I have no intention of buying an Xbox One (not least because theres no way I can afford it). However, there are a few exclusives coming out on it that may convince me otherwise if it gets a price drop late in the year. Usually stuff like “blurs the line between television and gameplay” means “will be a disappointing mess”. But as I’ve so very little invested in terms of anticipation I’m willing to give this a chance (also by that point someone I know may own an Xbox One and I can use my mesmeric powers to convince them to buy this game and let me play it). Also, trailer looks cool.

Sunset Overdrive

(??/??/14)(XB1)

frrfr235 q6q 645654q q56

What they say: An open world with no rules, just riots. Sunset Overdrive is an always changing, open-world game set in the not-so-distant future. A catastrophic event has left your city overrun by mutants. While the majority perish or transform, you flourish. It turns out your calling isn’t picking up trash or serving food, it’s mutant destruction. With an arsenal of kick-ass, overpowered weapons and a knack for traversing the city with hyper agility, its not the end of days for you. Your story is just beginning.

Why I want it: The trailer makes the game look like lots of fun and I really like the fast paced nature of the game and its cartoon aesthetic. Unfortunately its exclusive to a console I do not own and have no intentions of owning. So I’m probably not going to get a chance to play it.

Tom Clancy’s The Division

(??/??/14)(PC)

Water_street_view_web_100155adasdasdasd

What they say: A devastating pandemic sweeps through New York City, and one by one, basic services fail. In only days, without food or water, society collapses into chaos. The Division, a classified unit of self-supported tactical agents, is activated. Leading seemingly ordinary lives among us, The Division agents are trained to operate independently of command, as all else fails. Fighting to prevent the fall of society, the agents will find themselves caught up in an epic conspiracy, forced to combat not only the effects of a manmade virus, but also the rising threat of those behind it. When everything collapses, your mission begins.

Total breakdown: We live in a fragile and complex world, a web of interdependent systems we rely on every day. When one fails, others follow, creating a deadly domino effect that can cripple society in days. In Tom Clancy’s The Division™, immerse yourself in a frighteningly chaotic and devastated New York City, where all has failed. As a Division agent, your mission is to restore order, team up with other agents and take back New York.

Why I want it: Well first things first there are a bare handful of games either out or in production that have in game visuals as impressive as this. Now the graphics dont make the game but they sure as hell dont hurt. So there arent a huge amount of rpg’s out there with even a semi normal modern day setting. When it comes to MMO’s there are even less. So the setting certainly interests me, even if just because it feels a little novel. On the other hand I’m not a huge fan of first or third person PvP, I much prefer PvE stuff, especially multiplayer co-operative PvE stuff. So if The Division delivers on its promises about drop in/drop out play and its rpg elements then I think its the kind of game I could really enjoy. If it’s just another Day Z/Rust/Nether/whatever, then I likely wont bother with it at all.

Fever dreams

Games whos existence has been announced but little else. There’s not much to go on for these other than a name and a rough idea and the majority of them are unlikely to make it out in 2014.

Cartel

(??/??/??)(PC)

What’s the deal: This is basically Paradox’s take on the classic version of Syndicate. There arent a lot of details available at the moment, nor even an official release. All the details are from interviews such as this one – and they sound awesome. I loved the original Syndicate and was a big fan of Syndicate Wars as well (though I feel it failed to capture the brilliance of the first game). I am most definitely interested in seeing Paradox, a company who’s output appears a lot on this list, taking a crack at Syndicate.

deep down

(??/??/14)(PS4)

Deep-Down_2013_09-12-13_006deep-down-PS4

What they say: Very, very little so far. Basically that its F2P and “Deep Down’s gameplay consists of that of a dungeon crawler, which involves the player exploring dungeons based on the memories collected on artifacts. Weapons such as spears and swords can be utilized.”

Why I want it: Dragon’s Crown was one of the best games of last generation. This looks like something of a spiritual successor and the trailer looks amazing.

Final Fantasy XV

(??/??/14)(PS4)

xv-leviathanXV_Kingdom

What they say: Surprisingly little considering how ridiculously long the games been in development. Just look at the trailer and go Ooh and Aaah

Why I want it: The last few mainline FF games have not been great. XIII was bad, not as terrible as people make out, but very, very average. XIII-2 was actually fairly decent, but above average at best. Havent tried XIII-3 but I feel that at best we’re looking at above average again. While I loved FFXIV as its an MMO I dont think it really counts (I’ve also let my subscription lapse but I’ll be re-subbing for the next patch). On the other hand, while all this was going on, for over six years now in fact, I’ve been looking forward to FFXIII Versus. Which is no more. Now its morphed into FFXV and it looks amazing. Even if it didnt I still like the franchise enough to buy it.

God Eater 2

(??/??/??)(PSV)

23-god-eater-2-4god-eater-2-gameplay-scan

What they say: Nothing in english I’ve just realised.

Why I want it: It was only when I sat down to write up this post that I realise nothing has been said about his game being localised. I am crushed. It took fucking forever for the previous one (which was great) to be localised. I want this because I like the idea of Monster Hunter but seldom the execution. This plays faster and has an aesthetic and sub-systems I prefer. Fuck. I hope this gets localised

J-Stars Victory Vs

(??/??/14)(PS3)

Project-Versus-J_screens_1_000243670

What they say:Nothing in English and given how the properties are licenced outside Japan it’s tragically probably going to stay like that.

Why I want it:The stupidest (and greatest) comic book discussions and arguments also seem to spiral back to “I bet X could totally beat the bollocks off Y!”. This is that argument given videogame form and populated with characters from my favourite manga series. If this doesnt get localised I may cry. But its on the PS3 so at least I can import the Japanese version through my tears.

No Man’s Sky

(??/??/??)(??)

What they say: Very, very little so far.

Why I want it: Look at the trailer.

Persona 5

(??/??/14)(PS3)

What they say: Nothing much at all, also the english version probably wont make it out this year unfortunately.

Why I want it: Persona 3 (and its various editions) and Persona 4 (and its various editions) are fairly high up among my top ten games of all times. I would buy this sight unseen with no qualms whatsoever confident in the knowledge that it’ll be amazing.

Ravensdale

(??/??/14)(PC)

What’s the deal: “Ravensdale is a fast paced fantasy action game in a very unique steam powered setting featuring outrageously over-powered gadgetry. The player will seek out high pressure steam outlets, to supercharge his equipment, allowing him to pulverize his adversaries and overcome the obstacles on his path.”

I like both steampunk and action rpg’s and I find it amusing that its called Ravensdale (which is five minutes up the road from me). Hard to say anything more at this point as theres little to nothing to go on.

Well theres a little more to go on but considering its been in development for four years or so now and the Kickstarter was pulled this probably isnt coming out anytime soon (or more likely at all)

Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem

(??/??/??)(Wii-U)

What they say:Nothing other than that it exists

Why I want it:Because I would buy more or less anything that has Shin Megami Tensei somehwere in the title.

Yakuza 5

(??/??/??)(PS3)

What they say:Nothing in English

Why I want it:Japan’s answer to GTA? Well I’ve never finished a GTA game since the first and I am so very much not a fan of the modern ones. On the other hand I really like the Yakuza series. The stories are a nice mix of gangster melodrama and over the top actions. The actual storytelling itself is generally well done and has a nice mix of emotion and just plain old badassery. The actual gameplay is enjoyable and varied, the combat feels brutal and the various mini-games provide a nice distraction/alternate stuff to do. I’ve enjoyed the previous entries in the franchise, I particularly liked 4’s approach to having multiple main characters. 5 looks like its going to build on that with an even more varied cast. Cant wait (for the localisation announcement, which better come!) Edit: Well this has been on this list for two years. I sadly cant see it getting localised. Which is shit.
